Kidney Infection

I was diagnosed, finally, with a kidney infection. The antibiotics were completed on Saturday morning. However I still have a lower back pain. It really didn't seem to bad yesterday but today, it does seem to have come back. I was on Co-amoxiclav 500mg for 7 days. Is there a chance that I needed a longer dose?

You need to get in touch with whoever prescribed your medicine to find out how soon you should be feeling better, may need a follow up blood test or something.

I never had a blood test. I had 2lots of antibiotics for a suspected UTI. Urine samples were clear & got the all clear from the lab. One week later, they tested it & it showed I had infection. With the back pain & right side pain, diagnosed kidney infection. I had s scan of pelvis, kidneys etc and all came back normal

I had weird experiences a year ago (after going on high dose steroids and Amgevita ie Adalimumab) with urine test negative then positive several days later.. took the antibiotics but then decided D-Mannose was better.

It is expensive compared to UK prescription cost but I find it effective; any slight urge from the bladder, that is obviously not normal, gets dosed with prevention amount, usually two twice a day.

Not had a UTI since.

Quite possibly. They should be monitoring this... new bloods needed but certainly they need to be sure the infection has gone as soon as possible. As paulo says you need to contact your docs.

Please research D-mannose. It's a supplement that helps keep UTIs at bay. Talk to your doctor about it. It has worked for me. So it does work for some and is effective.

I have CKD and funnily enough an AKI doesn't usually hurt so I'd suggest you go to see GP asap as it could be any number of things if it helps if its from a UTI the best medication is a one off dose so many different types of meds require different. So please GP ! if your passing blood then its the A&E and rusty coloured wee can be dehydration so drink a lot of water and still talk to GP. Sorry to bang on about it but from experience this is important.

I have just spoke to a friend who has had a kidney infection previously and she was in pain in her back. Back pain is common. Have to admit though today, I feel so much better, yesterday, I was fatigued and just didn't want to do anything. Today I went to work this morning and even feel like going for a walk now. Will keep an eye on it though

No it definitely isn't, if the person has Polycystic Kidneys then they do but its not called the silent killer for nothing. If anything its flank (side) pain anyway. Look up Kidney Patients Association. A UTI may cause pain its radiating out. You say no Blood test but its a urine test for infection and blood for eGFR for kidney. So I think you may be talking about a UTI as kidney infection is a hospital job. So I wish you well but I know its antibiotics by line and fluid too as well as a CT scan so be careful and listen to your doctor rather than a friend as kidneys do not recover from injury. And the medication you state is for a UTI anyway.

Commonly used antibiotics for kidney infections include ciprofloxacin or co-amoxiclav

You can feel feverish, shivery, sick and have a pain in your back or side. (NHS site)

GP appointment tomorrow just to check

Good ! It's better to be safe than sorry AKI and CKD are nasty. You can't just assume it's a kidney infection and no advice from a friend or Dr Google replaces medical advice. UTI's are common but kidney infection is serious and never assume you've got one because it's unlikely that your GP would prescribe anything for it without a urine culture to find out what bacteria is being treated. All infections can cause fever etc as can the antibiotics themselves so I'm glad your seeing the GP to make sure either all is well or if you need further antibiotics etc.
