I’m having a lot of problems with my feet and ankles. I do try and walk the dog every day. Physio wants me to reduce my walk to ten minutes 4 times a day . Poor Darcy she likes a walk and won’t put up with a 10 minute walk she will put the brakes on 😂 can’t move a greyhound if they don’t want to. My orthotics will only fit one pair of boots and my physio said I can’t wear them must be sports trainers. My orthotics are so thick I can not find a pair they will fit into without squashing my feet. I have tried trainers for orthotics still too thick. Asked to be referred back to orthotics GUESS WHAT... no f2f appointments . I can see someone privately and have them made. Quoted price around £550. 🤬
Fed up.: I’m having a lot of problems with my feet and... - NRAS
Fed up.
Keen shoes / trainers are quite wide fitting plus I think they look nice. I have zero experience with orthotics so this might be a totally rubbish suggestion !
Nike do lots of different styles of trainers, the pegasus range are quite roomey .
£550 wowzers, you might end up with a pair of sponges from the previous post the other day 😁
Hope you find a solution too to get out of pain x

New Balance apparently good for thick orthotics. Might be cheaper than the private clinic?
Tried these no good 🥺
You need a shop that has so many ranges and sit there for hours till you find them ..............in the ideal World!
When I win the lottery I’m going to have them handmade 😁a girl can dream 😂
Have you looked at these widefitshoes.co.uk/
I had some from here and they have removable insoles, fit my orthotics and come in different widths too. I look at men’s too as they are wider than women’s shoe’s/trainers but it would depend on your shoe size too.
I have tried a few Kitty J . No luck I have a very very high arch and wide across the arch but narrow around the toes so they tend to be far to tight across the arch and too roomy around the toes .. just can’t win . Would be easier if I could try on but not many specialist shops around.
I wish there were shops to try on too. My problem is opposite, I need a wide toe box but the rest of my feet are thin so wide fit shoes assume the whole of your foot is big and they just fall off me. It’s a nightmare. I wear men’s Kickers which I’ve ripped the insole out of, I’d love more options 😔
I have some footwear from Cosyfeet which are extra deep and fit my custom made orthotics - have a look and see if there is anything suitable for your orthotics.
But I can't see why the physio is advising against boots. I wear my walking boots for any walking as they are the most comfortable footwear I have!
I have walking boots but he said they were to ridged and he wants to strengthen my ankles not rely on support. These telephone consultations leave me so frustrated I also feel that I need to be examined. I can if I go private but I can’t afford it.
I tend to need and rely on ankle and foot support, whether it is my walking shoes and boots or additional bought supports when a flare worsens my symptoms and pain.
I’m not sure that it’s feasible to ‘strengthen’ the ankles and feet when damaged by RD over the years... but muscles strengthened will better support joints.
I just continue with good, strong, supportive footwear.
I really feel for you. Others have made some suggestions which I hope might help. Just wanted to offer my sympathy x
If our feet aren't happy it can make us feel so down in the dumps, I hear you and hope you can find something. Take care x
Perhaps this recommendation by your Physio is short term, to strengthen specific muscles gradually? Then ease into longer walks?
I know it I must seem ridiculous and impossible, just like all the times I was told to rest whilst raising four young sons!
Can you go somewhere to allow the dog off to run around for ten minutes? There might be ways through this difficult restriction. Feel for you and hope you can work it out.
There are ways around it I’m just moaning. I just don’t understand that I can go private and have a f2f appointment but not seen by any medic under the NHS 🤷🏽♀️
Yes, arbitrary advice or choices. Not logical.
I have had face to face appointments throughout; blood tests, appointment by phone then in person with Rheumatologist, drug infusion in hospital... but my region also experienced very low numbers of infections with COVID-19.
I don’t have a choice with shoes, I can’t wear any, I have to wear men’s trainers, I go to Sports-world, as I can take my orthotics with me and try them for suitability, I take the inner soles out, well that was before Covid. I do the last couple of years wear men’s sketchers without my orthotics. Having triple foot fusions on both feet, my feet are very deformed. I love clothes and look ok till you get to the feet, lol ! I really feel for you x
I’m sorry to read that. Dare I ask if there is anyone else that can walk Darcy? I hope that solutions are found foe you
Thank you bubbly yes there is but it was something I enjoyed and it won’t be forever just 🤬me off something else RD had to answer for
But hopefully it’s just for now?
I have lots of trouble with feet and ankles too so I feel your pain! (literally and metaphorically!). What annoys me is the conflicting advice - rheumy says doesn't think ankle problems are related to RD so sends me to physio, physio takes one look and says not much can do because of RD!
Interestingly, my podiatrists' advice on footwear for weak ankles was exact opposite of yours - must have fairly rigid sole with lots of support around ankle. I too have a high arch and some quite deep orthotics so struggle with fit. If you haven't tried them yet you could have a look at Vionics - they do some trainers in a wide fit with removable insoles called Miles which I like because they are also lightweight and have enough padding around the ankles for my sensitive achilles.
Fingers crossed your walking set back is temporary and you and Darcy can be out there again soon. X
We are twins. All your problems are mine . I was still getting foot and ankle pain with the boots as I don’t roll when I walk . Basically plant my feet flat on the floor. I think he’s hoping trainers bring more flexible would me get that heel to toe movement. I have tried vionics but not your recommendation will give them ago. Thank you
If you in the South East a shop Golden Boot in Maidstone still fits shoes, from stylist Italian to trainers. Worth a trip and can stretch shoes too. Brilliant shop it does have an online site but you'd need to visit. You can take the ordinary insole out of Pikollino's but I don't think they do trainers.
Oh words fail me! I am really sorry to hear that you are getting no where fast despite trying everything. 😥 x
I hope you do find something that suits you soon 🌻
