Well an interesting week this has been in many ways but last night as I crawled and pushed myself up the stairs I got to bed and suddenly realised that I was not wheezing.
WHY- well after 8months of horrendous wheezing, the odd acid reflux, phlegm and coughs (not all the time) and just feeling awful I suddenly realised all of yesterday I had not been wheezing.
So I looked back at what had changed in the past week. Went back on MTX and run out of tumeric and black pepper capsules was the only difference.
I looked up tumeric and could not see any major contradictions but then found an article or should I say many on tumeric with black pepper. Rare but noted was respiratory issues with the addition of the black pepper as it makes the tumeric more absorbed uptp 2000%.
So now decided for a month no tumeric w black pepper and see what happens as this might have been my issue all along. And if it is I am one HAPPY girl!
Every week I make a big pot of soup to have for lunch, some times vegetable soup or sweet potato and veg soup or leek and potato...all these soups have a big helping of tumeric and black pepper in it and helps me so much with my RA.
Turmeric usually does not cause significant side effects; however, some people can experience stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea. In one report, a person who took very high amounts of turmeric, over 1500 mg twice daily, experienced a dangerous abnormal heart rhythm
I used to take Turmeric, but the hospital nurse told me it was a contraindication and asked me to come off it. I hope your wheezing stays away. Happy Easter. X
Yes I can imagine it is, it's frustrating though, that you think your taking something that is meant to be helping you but turns out is doing you more harm than good 😣 hay hum, it's a learning curve. I have found that i have just finished 40 days of no sugar, other than natural sugar, and I have found my memory and mood have been alot better, am having a break at and am eating what I want but will go back to the no sugar soon.
I always tell my GP what I am taking as I never assume as I know many things can contradict but I always missed out saying the black pepper part! I think making sure you talk about the supplements is important as I needed Vit D Bs etc even with a protein and veg and fruit diet etc.
I tried turmeric and black pepper tabs last year (think I've tried most things TBH, as my bank balance will attest!). I'd read all the rave reviews but all it did was give me the most terrible indigestion and stomach pains. I suppose we have to try these things and I do still take quite a few supplements but am a bit more wary these days! Hope you find this is the answer and your wheezing is gone for good.
I think our bodies are so fine tuned that what suits or helps one person will not for another. I think stopping them and seeing if this could be what's caused the wheezing isn't a bad thing as it's not prescribed. It's like allergic reactions trying to eliminate the cause or source. Glad the wheezing has stopped. Take care x
That's very interesting Deeb. Black pepper is an irritant, that could have been causing the acid reflux, which could then have been overspilling into your bronchial tubes causing you to wheeze. Although I have COPD, I have suffered with acid for as long as I can remember and this (as I found out several years ago) caused me to wheeze and also caused sore throats and cough. I used to use loads of black pepper but gave up in the 90s and my problem didn't disappear but became far less common than it was before. I fully intended to start taking turmeric supplements when I finished the Pred (I was on Omeprazole whilst on the Pred and apparently you shouldn't take turmeric whilst on any PPIs), I even asked my Rheumy doctor if it would be OK and he said there were no known contra-indications with MTX and turmeric and that it was good stuff but he didn't know about the black pepper. When I first came on this forum, someone who was also interested in turmeric gave me a formula for the turmeric and black pepper combination which was much less of the bp because I have a very sensitive stomach, but I can't find it now. I'd be really interested to see how you get on without - will you try turmeric on it's own eventually?
Wow sounds like the black pepper is the issue before I was taking just turmeric and I seemed fine and when I checked when I bought and started the turmeric with bp it correlates to when wheezing started
A little late to the conversation but for what it's worth, bell peppers and sweet potato are also really good and as they taste nice too it's not so bad putting them in your regular well balanced diet.
I’m seeing a connection with breathing issues and black pepper too.
It feels like I have too much air in my throat and my stomach bubbles like mad. Took Tumeric for ages but changed to Tumeric with black pepper and after 8 weeks I’m finally making the connection. I stopped taking it and it vastly improved stomach settled down and breathing started to feel much more normal. Took one tablet as a test and bingo, full on symptoms again.
Ordered my normal turmeric

Its weird how just one ingrediant can change our bodies however I have also noted I have to be careful now with regular black pepper just somethingin it seems to create an issue whereas white ground pepper I am ok with. Its a killer as boh chef trained and love cracked black pepper in cooking.
I think I’ve hit the nail on the head. Never had issues with black pepper before but then I’ve never probably had so much of it before.
All seems to make sense as it started around the time I ordered them and calmed down when I stopped them. Thank goodness I now know what it is and will be more careful around it in general now.
