Hi,

My son is also type 1 with asthma. I’ve been hoping he gets a letter soon as his employer is saying he should be at work. He’s a key worker ( carer for autistic adults) but I’m so worried due to not being able to distance 2 metres. His doctor has also said he is at no greater risk. I feel so let down and haven’t slept all week. Why is there so much conflicting guidance. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Hi Flossie-M

How can your doctor say he’s not at any greater risk, when the government has set guide lines for certain health conditions with Asthma being in that category.

I’ve just looked on web site, it says those at risk would had received a text and a letter, if you haven’t, please wait till after the 29th, if you have not received a letter by that time they have asked those people to contact their gp to ask for a ‘shielding note’.

If you don’t get any joy, they’ve asked if you contact ‘mutual aid network’ who might be able to help.

No letters received as yet for my son or myself.

Myself, received a government text over the last week or two, believe that to be general all round message, but not received a letter as yet. I have RA, Coeliac disease, Sjögren’s syndrome also IBD.

Hope all goes well, keeping fingers crossed.

Best wishes

Pamela x

Hi Pamela,

Thank you for this,I honestly don’t understand why he has refused to help, particularly when he has 2 underlying conditions, there doesn’t seem to be any guidance for this specific 2 conditions. Can you by any chance tell me where it says you can ask the doctor for a shielding note please so that we can go further with this if he doesn’t get a letter. Thank you so much for your reply xxxx

Please remember that not everyone will receive a letter.

"While 900,000 adults and children across England have been identified so far through NHS digital coding, there are some patients at high risk who will not be identified via this route. A BSR working group has been working with the RCP, other societies and the CMO for England to address this by developing a risk stratification guide for rheumatology. We have also published a scoring grid to help inform this exercise."

Know your own risk level. And Stay Home.

Pardon my not knowing who is issuing these letters and if you receive one what does this do and don't receive one and you know you are at risk who do you contact? Sorry but I'm a bit confused by what it all entails. Thanks

Those who receive one need to shield. Those who don’t and don’t have their doctors advice have to do as lilyak says and “know their own risk level and stay at home”

Thanks KittyJ it all gets a bit confusing, no letter as yet but my GP said this time last week (when I had an emotional wobble) that I was to stay in and should isolate myself as I was at risk. So thanks for clearing my confusion up. Keep safe and well x

Hi Pippy, i haven't been on this Forum for about a week. I came off it because not everyone on here were as nice as you. Hey I've missed our little chuckle. Have you been to Gregg's lately.Hahaha.

I won't forget that in a hurry.

I'm still digging deep. Just like you used to tell your Dad.. Been finding it really hard going. Sometimes I've thought. Oh b....r it. BUT.

And it's a Big Big Big But .

Will try to message you later Pippy.

You take Care and look after yourself. Gjkas ❤xx

You too, I think a lot of us will have to decide for ourselves😔

Just remember no system is perfect, it's known that some very high risk peope won't get letters.. The matrix posted tells you if you're very high risk and if you should shield. But at this point everyone needs to stay home. The UK is in lockdown. The only difference in shielding and self-isolating is the shielding is for longer. But its very likely the lockdown will go longer than the initial three weeks anyway. There is no difference in practical terms right now.

Basically, letter or no, everyone needs to self-isolate. That means not leave the house, except for essential groceries, pharmacy etc. And exercising once per day is recommended, but only if you can exercise without coming into contact with other people. You can exercise with members of your household whom you are in lockdown with. The letter doesn't matter so much anymore because everyone in the country needs to stay home now. Please just stay home, look after yourself and others.
