Root canal and ra meds

I’ve left a message for rheumatoid nurse but was wondering if I can have a root canal done while on benepali and methotrexate? I’m in terrible pain and doctor thinks I also might have Trigeminal Neuralgia. Dentist wants me to have this done first to rule it out. Any help with this would be great.

Ask about having antibiotic cover - if you do have an infection there it could be released into your general circulation by having treatment on the root canal. But otherwise the sooner the better I would have thought.

Thank you so much as it might come back I’m going to go for an extraction. It will just be sorted then. Thanks again.

Im on enbrel, Benepali is the biosimilar drug to it. I was told when I needed root canal treatment not to inject the week before or the week after treatment and then to resume taking it if everything was alright.

Thank you that’s really helpful. I had to miss injection last week so will take tonight as date for root canal work is 14 October! And am now waiting for date for extraction which I think would be better for me.

Root canal is now booked for 14 October as was told by dentist will be months on waiting list for extraction. So now the risk of constant infections! Just can’t believe this.

Why have you got to wait months for an extraction? My last root canal was because a crown came out. I phoned my dentist up at 8.45 and two hours later I was in the chair having work done, it was an emergency appointment. I'm with a NHS dentist too.

Dentist says extraction has to be in a hospital as tooth is twisted. I’m so fed up!! X

I had two old root canals extracted a few weeks ago whilst on daily baricitinib 4mgs and 12 mgs prednisolone.

I was advised by my rheumatologist to stop baricitinib 7 days before the extractions and restart when the sockets had healed. The dentist advised to double prednisolone on the morning before extraction. ( I didn't do this).

However due to feeling pretty rotten RD wise I only stopped taking baricitinib 3 days prior to the extractions, and under the dentists advice restarted after 10 days, again due to feeling bad RD wise.

The actual extractions were trouble and pain free, the sockets although clean took a little longer to heal than anticipated but everything was very straight forward and uncomplicated.

I did not have any antibiotics as both my dentist and I did not want unnecessary medication.

I removed the new denture several times a day and cleaned with milton solution before reinserting and used ordinary table salt and water mouth washes.

It really could not have been more straight forward. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. Dentist has said I will still be prone to infections even getting the root canal done, which he said will need three procedures. Which is why I think just getting the tooth removed would be better in the long run than stopping and starting biologic and mxt. But to get the tooth out means a hospital visit as he feels it’s too risky with the twisted tooth for him to do. All very annoying as I just want to limit my chances of infections and just concentrate on getting RD under control. Just finished one lot of antibiotics and have another course waiting just in case.

I am on Mtx, prednisolone and Hydroxy and recently had root canal work done. Both the dentist and rheumatology nurse said I could just carry on with them unless I needed antibiotics for an infection.

Obviously it is best for you to ask as you take a biologic and I didn't. I hope you don't have to wait too long.

Thanks on antibiotics and a biologic as well. Wait is extremely long have been told by dentist! As if we don’t have enough to deal with already. X
