Hi everyone I hope your having a pain free Sunday.
I had a depo shot in the butt on Thursday and just wondered how long this can take to work. I have several swollen joints, one knee is very bad. In the past I thought it had started to work after a couple of days but this time I’ve had no relief at so far.

Sometimes they work within a few days, anything up to a week so there may be time yet, I hope so anyway. I'm not wanting you to be like me anyhow, I had one a week last Friday & had no response whatsoever. My last one eventually kicked in a week later but just for the one day (it was a brilliant day though!) but as you know they are intended to help so I hope it does for you & gives you a good couple of months relief. Oddly, localised ones into specific joints work for me but I'm reluctant to have any more generals, might as well spare my bones.
Fingers crossed it kicks in for you within a few days.
That is awful nmh.....I really wonder what blocks long term steroids working for you......I don't want to rub it in saying lucky me,but before I was on RTX I had the odd Depo Injection & it would last a good 8-10 weeks & it kicked in on day one.
Have of tried differ of types steroids....like Kenalog....that works really well for RA sometimes.
I really don't know because as I say local ones do, as do oral steroids. I wonder if that's relative, even though I'm down to 2mg? I shall ask why general ones don't work next time I see my Rheumy/SpR, nothing to lose as I don't think it's worth wasting money giving them to me! Actually though both have been Depomedrone... I wonder if I was given Kenalog it would make a difference? I'd be happy to try one more to find out. Something else to ask, don't know why I didn't think of that, thanks.
On the contrary I'm pleased they work for you & most everyone else! Having felt what they can for that one day how could I not be?! ☺️
It's always worth asking isn't it? I am very fortunate that my Rheumy at the time was very patient in answering questions & way back when I was popping pain killers like smarties he explained the difference....after my nasty experience with Pred.
Sadly brain fog & anno Domini have dulled the answer...should have written it down!
Ah well, not to worry. I can battle on another 6 months & always see my GP if things get bad enough to increase my pred. I'd rather not of course as I've managed to get down this far & next step is slow taper!
I had one in February last year. No difference. In fact I got worse. I’ve had a month’s course of steroid tablets while Sulphasalazine gets to work and that has helped. It’s disappointing when consultants say you’re going to feel so much better and then you don’t .
I had Depo shot on the 3rd Jan. Took a couple of days to kick in. I know for everyone's it works different times,
If your dont get any relief soon ask for another rather then suffer in pain, I'm sure they will give you another whilst waiting for your meds to kick in.
I was told to just phone rheumatology they would get me in sooner if need another before my next hospital date.
For me in the past the steroid shots in the butt work immediately. I used to walk out of the hospital a different person then ten days later .... Worn off! Could you ask for the knee injecting with a steroid shot? They tend to work much longer and more effectively into the joint Don't hesitate to tell them it hasn't worked or done much. Feel better soon I hope. xx
Hi Edee I had one last Tuesday and it hasn’t kicked in as yet, I am having a second one tomorrow so we will see ...my consultant has said I can have three, but if I get relief from them I will cancel the third and save it for my next bad flare. Hope yours kicks in soon and you get some relief x
I had my first injection in December and they said you will see a difference in 48 hours, no but at the end of the first week I wasn’t such a struggle to get down the stairs, so long may it last!
