Humira reactions?

This week I had an injection site reaction to the Humira. Felt bad during and after I did it, then woke up in the morning to my thigh being all red and like a welt. I used Benadryl cream and that soothes the redness but it still feels like someone used a sledge hammer on my thigh.

Anyone else have this happen and do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Jill

Hi Jill,

I’m more of a background lurker than a regular poster but saw your post and wanted to reply because I had the same thing when I was on Humira. I called Rheumatology Helpline and was told it could be an injection site reaction or it could be signs of an allergy to Humira and I was asked to send photos to them for review so they could determine next steps.

They decided to treat it as an injection site reaction initially and they advised antihistamine tablets and said to take an antihistamine tablet a little while before future Injections and as needed for a few days after.

I feel that it’s important for you to make contact with the doctors who prescribe your Humira to get their advice and in the meantime to keep an eye on it and to ask out of hours doc for advice if it doesn’t get any better/doesn’t improve. Measuring the size of the welt/area of redness as best you can can be helpful (I found) when describing the extent of the symptoms - also regular measuring can show if its growing or reducing in size. Hopefully it’s a local reaction from the injection but if you are worried, and/or if it keeps getting worse, or if you start to develop a rash elsewhere please call medical help straight away. These are “serious” meds and it’s always best to be on the safe side.

Thinking of you,

Kind wishes, Tillyxxx

I had a reaction to Humira too with the injection site. Spoke to my Rheumatology department who recommended ice packs and antihistamines. These didn't work and my injection site became so bad that the area was as big as a grapefruit. Had to come off Humira. Now I'm on Cimzia and doing just fine x

No, never happened to me. If it does not improve quickly or in particular if it progresses, get it checked ASAP in case you have introduced infection.
