This is the pic taken about three months after my first bunion operation.
The right foot was much worse that the left one.....the big toe was completely crossed over the next toe & was pushing all my toes sideways.....I could hardly get a shoe on.
I wasn't going to have the left one done, but the surgeon said it would only get worse, & as my right foot was by now size 5 & the left was my normal size 6 buying shoes was getting to be a problem

God, you must’ve been in a lot of pain!! I know what you mean re toes at ( almost) right angles! Shoes, especially trying to find a pretty shoe, is a real
I’ll be seeing doc anyway so will see what they say. I’d been having severe pain in stomach area and following ultrasound a couple of weeks ago, they left a voice message to get in touch ( I was in Budapest)- called today and I’ve a cyst on right kidney so I’ve to go in and see them.
Thank you for posting. It's been so useful. I'm so glad you have lovely straight toes again and I'm jealous. My left foot looks very like those in the picture and it's getting worse. The big toe keeps trying to cross over the top of the next ones and can reach the middle toe. My podiatrist will be making toe separators for me at the next appointment. Shoes are a bit tricky too. Anybody out there need size 5 heels from Hotter 'cos I have three pairs?
Have you spoken to your Rheumy or GP about having surgery.? If you start favouring one foot it puts your knees & hips out of whack, & can cause all sorts of problems.
Don't be nervous about having it fixed...I actually had a GA, but I understand it can be done under a local these days...my surgery was about 6 years ago.
It was a bit of a pain being on crutches for a couple of weeks ...especially with the right foot which meant I couldn't drive, but the left was no problem, except the shady looks after I parked in the disabled bays at the supermarket...with permission I might add.As soon as the plaster was off I could "heel walk" & it all went smoothly from there.
I wish I'd had mine done years ago & it was a great excuse to buy lots of new shoes...but not until I knew what size. I ended up back where I started at a size 6!...but my old shoes were all misshapen ...so I broke the bank I in the shoe shops buying strappy sandals!
I have an appointment about the bunion on my left foot in October. The last time I had it operated on and the second toe straightened my left foot increased by a shoe size and I’m worried that this may happen again!
Well if you had a toe straightened out it would be flatter therefore longer wouldn't it?
When I had both my bunions done - separately- the operated on foot at first went down in size....but when they both settled down I ended up with the same shoe size I started out with on both feet.
The only reason I could think of your shoe size increasing again would be if the toe with the bunion is bent like a hammer toe (not very likely) & once again if straightened it would lengthen....ask the surgeon you see what he thinks.
My second toes have always been longer than my big toes & after the surgery they still are.
That is one of my questions for the surgeon, but I’ll have to have it done anyway because walking is very painful and buying comfortable shoes is a joke! I’m also going to ask about the toes on my right toe - they are all bent.
Get it all sorted as soon as you can......as we were saying yesterday if knee & hip replacements are going to be rationed you can bet your life bunion surgery will be on that list!!
