Yes it is scary. My hip sometimes gives way completely out of the blue. Just my hip, nothing else. I haven't had a scan / X ray on it but I'm beginning to wonder if it's the start of osteoporosis as my last dexa scan showed I was borderline. I should have had one in Dec last year , but I'm still waiting.........

Many times have my hips given way. Once at a conference, I went to get up and start to walk and stumbled. Embarrassing. It doesn’t seem to happen while disease is under control.

Go gently

My left hip sometimes gives way- the last time it was at my f2f interview for a blue badge. The plus side of that was I was successful with my application.my right knee gives way quite often but fortunately my hip and knee don’t party on the same day!

It's my knees rather than hips , but still quite disconcerting. I've been told by my GP, without examination or investigation that it is OA in my knees.

Don't like that attitude to wards patient care ,it sometimes leads to more troublesome treatment being required at a later date or the patient ending up in a wheelchair.

I'm changing rheumatologist at present and changed GP a while back. So I will pursue. My previous GP was a big 👎

I agree with you about this issue with the hospitals and doctors. We keep getting told different things. One minute they say doctors are working and the next they tell us that there is no staff or doctors. It’s like an excuse and we are all running around in circles desperately trying to see or speak to someone. I finally booked a phone appointment with my GP for next Wednesday , it is a ten day wait. A friend had a stroke last week and is now in Eastbourne hospital , our doctors surgery did nothing for him, it was only my sister and I that called 111 and they sent an ambulance straight away. But our surgery only gave him a nurse to speak with and she missed the signs of stroke. It’s left me feeling quite annoyed about the delay for this stroke victim.

Hello rabbit65, it is very scary how the services are coming today even when its a serious matter like a stroke or TIA , I have not been able to see my GP for a long time but was informed I could have a face to face with a weeks notice. Most telephone appointments are on the day if you ring up early. 111 are very good but here in the West Midlands there are no ambulances to send either in emergency or for patient transport . Whilst the local hospital is getting highly praised for its performance during the pandemic. Covid 19 is only one illness and it is good what the staff have done to help control it and treat it , however that is what their job is about care in all times. Why single out one hospital (world publicity) , many NHS workers have given their all during difficult times and changes in the way they work. But at what expense to general services which are still struggling to cope with normal services that were usual before Covid19. ?

Thanks for your reply Katie , I guess we have just got to struggle on regardless and live in hope .

I'm sorry to hear about people having such problems accessing both GP and hospital care. I'm very fortunate living where I do in Wales to have good GP services (although somewhat anomymous and discontinuous) and good rheumatology care.

Without putting pressure on our MPs to improve the number of staff it won't improve. Not just GPs and hospital doctors, but nurses, physios, radiologists, porters, and all the other people essential for running a good service. It can't, now be done, in the short term becasue it takes time to train people, but we do need to start.

So it's up to all of us to put pressure on our MP to make this something that they are passionate about solving!

My present GP in Edinburgh is good, but I think I am in a minority.

I live in a mixed demographic area, with a high number of retired people.

My previous GP was in an affluent area, the service they provided was poor, very poor.

Yes, the NHS is under tremendous stress, but I do believe in primary care the practice culture plays a big role in the service provided, with how much money the GPs want to take home a defining factor.

My present practice has a notice on the wall saying they do charge for some services....some letter writing for example, but the money goes into providing a part time nurse and receptionist. No individual Dr takes any money for these services.

My previous practice charged me £130 for a poorly written letter with the incorrect diagnosis. When I complained I was told to write it myself and the Dr would sign it. I did and she did.

£130 straight into her pocket.

Sorry you had this! It’s horrid. I’d say asked for scans and X-rays. My rheumatologist organised mine as right knee and hip gives way or gets stuck. Then she sent me to an orthopaedic surgeon (who was her husband) and he said my right hip was worse than my knee so to expect worse in the future, great! It’s oesteoarthritis with me. They sent me to physio too, the guy there said ‘it’s all about strengthening your ‘glutes’. Sounds painful doesn’t it lol. It’s your bum muscles basically he explained. I must say this heat isn’t helping at all at the mo. Seems worse in the heat and the winter. Hope you get some help. I’ve been trying to see my doctor for a month, they keep sending me texts to make an appointment too 🤷‍♀️

Yes I get it too or my toes split into two directions like a v shape then knee goes or hip and I’m on floor and can’t move in great pain and crying. Then I’m struggling to walk for few days. My rhemy precovid said yes it can happen. and sent me for an X-ray. That was Jan 21 and when I contact Gp about it in April this year she arranged phyo. He let me explain and said what did rhemy say. When said haven’t received an appointment yet he said ring them. I did I’ve a phone appointment beginning of aug. So my advice would be ring your hospital.

Its really frightening the care for arthritis , just because its not seen as a killer disease . I get my knee go occassionally and some flareup pains make it very uncomfortable to walk. Theres also the risks of other injuries from falls. Hope you are recovering a little now.

well I rang GP and told them what happenedhe said on the phone, have I contacted the rheumatologist, I said no because you can't get anyone, I then said could I have an xray on my hip

he said, and wait for it- that he didn't want to expose me to "radiation"

it made me laugh and be angry at the same time, I said thats the least of my worries radiation,he then said he would send an e mail to rheumatologist and if they think its a good idea an xray he be happy to send me for one.

I said they would agree.

I think its more who will pay for it, if rheumatologist agree, then they will send rheumatologist the bill

now you can see why I don't brother with my GPs even if you can speak to them on the phone
