Fluid in my knees

Hi everyone

I'm still quite new here. I have Stills disease, only recently diagnosed in December 2017.

Last week I had my first Rheumatology appointment at a new hospital. The consultant said I have two large bakers cysts in my knees and that if its causing too much pain, I should have it drained with a steroid injection.

I'm quite worried about getting this done so just wondering if anyone else had a good experience after. Does it help? Any bad side effects after?

Many Thanks xx

Lots of people have had this done - if you put Baker's cyst, or knee drainage, perhaps, into the search box you will find previous comments.

I had same issue. Huge bakers cysts behind my knees. They will not drain a bakers cyst. It is like a fluid filled balloon, as soon as they poke it, it pops. The steroid injection I to the knee joint will help very little. It takes time for the steroid to make it into the cyst sac. And then it does very little. I was on Prednisone and other anti inflammatory medication wo no avail. As the DR's still have not figure me out, saying Stills, Addison's, RA or inflammatory polyester arthropathy, I was put on Anakinra (Kineret) for Still ' disease. It did not work. Got onto Actemra (tocilizumab) and the cysts went away within a few weeks. My right cyst measured 17cm long by 3-4cm diameter. I could not bend my legs as the cysts were hindering all movement.

Hopefully you find some relief.

I had my knee drained with steroid injection as a consequence of bakers cyst. It worked really well then. Have had knee drained + steroid injection on a couple of occasions since - it worked really well and was such a relief. Yes, it was a little uncomfortable but huge relief afterwards - the pain was gone - no side effects. Hope you get the same relief.

This deb. I’ve had stills for 20 years and yes I had one orange sized backers cyst in my knee. I had surgery to remove it but it came back. I had it drained and injected about 5 times each time less fluid built up and finally it got small and hard. Now it about 1 inch by 2 inch and it only causes problems once in a great while when inflammation decides to go there. The rheumatologist said keep walking and that helps a lot especially walking in the pool.

Hello, I was diagnosed with Stills six months ago and too have had fluid on the knees. They have been drained a few times and although it can be a bit painful when the needle goes in it is a huge relief when it is done and my knees look like mine again, I can recommend the fluid drain. Hope all goes/went well for you
