Sorry if this post twice but I’m not sure whether it worked first time.
I woke up this morning and stretched my arm and heard a crunching noise coming from my upper back/ribs. There is an excruciating pain on certain movements including getting up from lying position and rolling over in a lying position.
The same thing occurred about 10 years ago and it took 2.5 years to solve until I went to my amazing osteopath. She said it was a rib which had moved out of place and solved it through manipulation and acupuncture. She also mentioned that I have hypermobile joints and sometimes I get back spasms if I make sudden movements for example putting on a pair of socks.
I have been doing some research this morning to see whether it is related at all, and I just wanted to know if anybody else had the same problem? I have seronegative arthritis. It might just be totally unconnected but I am interested to see what other peoples’ experiences have been?
I do not post on this forum very often, but I wanted to say that I read the form every day and I find all of your posts extremely useful.
Best wishes
Claudia

I have similar in my lower spine where I have damaged discs. Sometimes if I jolt my foot when walking I can feel a vertebrae move/spasm and get a sudden bolt of pain. Which sometimes lasts and sometimes doesn't. Once it completely floored me for days, unable to move at all. For me it's not related to rheumatoid arthritis, but the osteoarthritis that has damaged my spine.
Hi ccg , i have Sjögrens which has also caused muscle and joint pain . Over the last 8 years i have had problems with my ribs subluxing which causes severe pain and spasm on occasion. It has been very bad on 2 occasions when i was in spasm for 6 weeks and need acupuncture and muscle relaxants to help settle things down . I still have more minor spasms , i had one this morning, which settle after a few hours/ days . I don’t know why it happens , i dont have hyper mobility in other joints, but like you it can happen very simply it i move the wrong way or reach for something.
Hi weathervane thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear that you have it frequently. I think it is mainly my back which is hypermobile. I know what you mean, so annoying when you go to put a shoe on and you feel it “go”. Do you get over the counter muscle relaxants or does it need to be prescribed? Thanks
It was diazepam from gp used very sparingly . There is a condition where ribs are prone to subluxation, cant remember name at moment but ive never been diagnosed, will ask rheumy next appointment.
I sometimes get spasms like that in various parts of my body. I was once walking from just across the road to get back home and suddenly had extreme back pain low down and had to just stand there holding my back and bent over in a strange position because the pain took my breath away. Eventually I managed to hobble home again, but what was the most hurtful was that several people just walked by me (including two that I knew) and not one asked if I was ok.
Another time (and it was new years day a few years ago) I was just walking along our landing when suddenly my whole body seemed to go into spasm and I just couldn't move at all. It was horrendous and my husband got a chair, put it behind me and I gradually lowered myself onto it. We thought we were going to have to call an ambulance, but thankfully I eventually moved.
At other times, I have had a severe pain in my thigh just from standing up from a chair etc. It is horrible and sometimes the pain takes a long time to go.
Thanks for sharing. Yep I have had the “being stuck” when I am walking happen as well. Almost like something locks and you can only take tiny steps to begin. And then it slowly starts to ease off.
