Pain killers and fasting blood test

Is it ok to take naproxen before having a fasting blood test?

You're best checking with the person who requested the test. I know that fasting blood tests for cholesterol (lipids), iron, blood glucose, (diabetes) & such the general info is that NSAIDs & certain other meds shouldn't be taken on the day of the test as they can be sensitive to them but do check first especially if you've bad inflammation & really can't do without it.

Many thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the doctor who requested the test is a locum and only covers on a Monday which is why I came to this site to ask. I'll probably try to put up with the pain and take the naproxen afterwards.

Probably best. Although you'll probably be having the blood test early'ish so if you take yours with your evening meal like me you may be ok. I think the longest fast is 12 hours, that gives plenty of time for it to have worked it's way through your system, it's half life is around 12 hours too but if you can manage without it I would.

I think so but avoid very sugary foods otherwise they might consider you as a diabetic because your blood sugar is so high. High fat can sometimes interfere with the testing procedure as well.

I wouldn't personally take it on an empty stomach.

Thank Jayne, that's kind. No, I won't take it on an empty stomach, I'll make sure I have a late breakfast ~ I'll probably be quite hungry by then!

Been really bad few month now . I had MRI which qualified me for biologics so I'm seing the consultant on Monday so fingers crossed (if I could lol ) . I had sternum MRI on Tuesday and after being in agony lying on my chest stuck in a brace they then tell me it didn't work so I've got to go back next Friday so I'm in more pain . The thing doing me most is because it's in both my hands so can only use 2 of my fingers it's so hard especially getting showered, dressed just general getting ready and trying to make a drink or something to eat is virtually impossible. But I'm not a quitter and I will beat this hopefully. Just to be pain free would be great and get a little normality back in my life . We're all in the same situation on here and I've found this site amazing, it's helped me so much and I can't believe how many lovely people ask about you and take time to give u their own advice ..... thankyou for asking how I am sorry it's been a bit long and winded and I hope your ok too 🌹

Good luck with your next MRI scan and hopefully your meeting with the consultant on Monday will prove beneficial. All the best.

Hi. I was advised to stop taking Naproxen for 5 days before any blood tests, to make sure it was out of my system and not masking any inflammation etc. This has also applied to day surgery for eg: Carpal Tunnel. It was painful as I depend on a daily dose of the maximum Naproxen, but I wanted to be sure my blood tests were accurate.

Thank you for that. I've decided to cancel the blood test until I'm able to come off the Naproxen for the same reason you stated, so thank you for reassuring me.

Think you should not take Naproxen while fasting.

I also take Naproxen, but never in an empty stomach.

As naproxen should be taken with food, I would wait until after having blood taken.
