In Praise of NHS physio....

This morning I had an extended physio assessment at my local hospital. It seems I should have had this when originally diagnosed, over a decade ago, but for some reason that did not happen. I’m not sure if this is something that is offered elsewhere.. but it’s worth asking if you’ve not had similar! The appointment lasted 2.5 hours in total, with a half hour break in the middle. The physiotherapist was able to identify exactly where I was feeling pain just through her observations of my movements. She explained things so well to me. I’ve been given really clear guidance on how to exercise my body effectively and safely to help my joints. I have RA, but areas of osteoarthritis were also identified, particularly in my lower back. I’ve been given guidance on posture and core strengthening to help my back. I can honestly say this has been the most helpful appointment I’ve ever had concerning my health and well being. I told the physio this, and she looked quite emotional, thanked me, and said that they were pushing to keep these extended assessment sessions as cutbacks were threatening them. There aren’t any miracle solutions to RA, but along with taking the meds I now feel empowered to help myself appropriately. Hope sharing this helps someone out there!

A good physio is so wonderful. I have found mine incredibly helpful, not just in getting me through difficult patches but as you say with advice for the best type of self help. Increasingly rare, but everyone should defi at Ely ask to see if it's available in their patch.

I have a wonderful NHS physio, although session is only half an hour, every fortnight. I go for my shoulder, but he also gives me exercises for my knees, advice on posture etc. We also have a lovely chat and I look forward to going.
