I have a Bowel problem, but cannot put a name to it ?

Around ten months ago my digestive stopped working the way it always had. I had awful gas and bloating and my weight went down to 7 stone from 11 stone, went to my doc and he put it down to IBS. The previous year I had a Colonoscopy and a Gastroscopy and was found to have a Pepic ulcer and was put on Lanzprozal for it. All this was fairly straightforward until I discovered I eas not digesting my food.

I know this sounds weird, I discovered that if I held my body in certain positions my digestive system worked if I held these positions and concentrated my mind on it intensely for around an hour evetuthing works ? Furthermore , if I drink a litre and a half of water each morning around an hour later my Bowel empties perfectly. No gas or bloating ? Now my weight is 10 and a half stone ? And here is the problem, I feel like a slave to my digestive system and it takes around a few hours of my time each day for something that should be automatic and stress free.

Can any of you guys shed some light on what the cause of this is. It is getting me down and depressed !

Sounds like IBS. Have you noticed if certain foods make it Worse?

I have IBS but suffer from the opposite problem to you. I have to be careful to avoid certain foods.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist? I guess it might also be something to do with ulcer...but I'm no doc!

Perhaps keep a food diary to see if certain things make things worse.

Hi Nettac ! Thanks for your input. I don't have a problem with food save watching any foods that aggravate ulcers. Moreover, alcohol and food together now produce headaches ? Its as if some wires are crossed the wrong way around.

Again thanks.

Hi stars shine. I have exactly the same thing😠every single day my bowel runs my lifemail. It took 2 hours of pain to pass 1 stool.I ended up exhaust and it caused massive heartburn 😢it woke me up at 5 30 this morning again same thing.I feel battred& bruised.I. m going to start take a spoonful of lactulose everyday now.I've had enough of feeling burning sensations on my stomache.

Hi Missymo ! By what you describe your own symptoms as painful means they are different to mine. Though, granted, there is some similarity. I tried Lactulose and it just gave me a lot of wind and gas. In truth nothing works for me, Dulcolax is helpful only after digestion has taken place and I'm constipated because it irritates the bowel wall which moves stools out. Here's the rub, if there is no digestion, there's no stool to pass?

For some strange reason I cannot automatically digest food unless I hold my body in s certain position and concentrate on my Bowel area...after a gew minutes of this I feel liquids moving inside from top to the bottom of my Bowel particularly I feel fibre digestion at around or after 6 p.m. which is breakfast moving its way down.

Your problem is down to digestion and lack of bowel motility due to sluggish bowel.

Thanks for your thoughts , and yes, we are similar in respect of valuable time lost to our inner functionality.

Strashing thanks for the reply.yes lactulose does give me wind pains but it's the only way to get a decent bowel movement. I just take it if I. My desperate but if I. My being honest.nothing really works because I've had 3 major ops.& radiation so I think really its just attacked my bowel & my entire digestive system.x

Thanks for input, I never noticed your extra comments first time around. I do feel for you beacuse I went through several months, where, like your self, my system almost stopped working, and got prescribed Lactulose by my GP. And, all it just gave me wind.

Would you benefit from a liquid diet ? I know someone who had part of her Bowel removed and is doing well last time we spoken to each other. But, I guess, you have other issues.

Anyway, thanks for your interest and I do hope things improve for you.

I have had a weird gastro problem for years. I would feel unwell for a few days, nothing you could put your finger on really. Then I would lose my appetite, followed by stomach pain, then started to feel sick, which was followed by foul sulphur burping and gas. Eventually sick, sick, sick which was the consistency of a cow pat (disgusting I know!) and sometimes the other end started, I would be unwell for 2- 3 days. Two weeks later same thing. This seemed to happen every 6 months, it was if my stomach would shut off and nothing could pass through and was put down to IBS - I wasn’t convinced.

Then things changed. Episodes every 2 months but no diarrhoea. My doctor sent me for a gastroscopy, which found a number of polyps and a sliding Hiatus hernia. They doubled my dose of Omeprazole for a week and said it should settle down and gave me the usual dietary advice sheet and if it didn’t settle come back and they would look again. My diet is quite good anyway, but I have given up spicy food, not that I had a lot of it anyway! My portions are always small too, little and often. I’ve never had a big appetite either.

Anyway, I started looking to see if I could find others had these symptoms and found loads of people with sulphur burps and noticed that many mentioned solving the problem by taking a probiotic tablet. I ordered 8 months supply and haven’t had one episode since I’m glad to say and long may it continue! So I’m hoping this has sorted my problem. (Hope I haven’t put the mockers on it!!!!)

Hope you find a solution and feel better soon. X

Where do you get your probiotic from?

Smiler53 profile image
Smiler53 in reply to Fi23

Dear old Amazon. Probably not the best, but seems to have worked for me.

Cool. Which probiotic do you go for? Have heard different ones are better for different issues.

Smiler53 profile image
Smiler53 in reply to Fi23

Boom supplements. I normally go for the promotion offer of 2 pots free delivery = 8 months supply. They seem to suit me, but read the reviews.

I buy probiotics from amazon as well, but I buy the ones in the "punch out" packaging (don't know how else to say it) because they don't have to be refrigerated. Almost all other probiotics need to be refrigerated and I can't imagine amazon doing that. I also recently started drinking "Kombucha" which is a fermented tea beverage. I know it sounds weird, but the supposed digestive, bowl, and immune system benefits are worth a try. I've only just started drinking it so cannot say if it works. Google it and read about the benefits. I will try things if the ingredients are natural and safe and these are. I have also read articles in the past about fermented things like sauerkraut and Kim chi for health benefits and they were all good.

I also drink Ginger Tea with honey every evening.

Plus every now and then have some of those probiotic yogurts.

Thanks , it is nice to hear things are better for you, after such a torrid time you must be "over the moon" and all the way back around again.I tried prebiotic supplements but to no avail and after reading your comment I think I shall give it another twirl.

Thanks and best wishes.

Perhaps talk to your GP about checking whether you have dismotility syndrome/gastroparesis?

nhs.uk/conditions/gastropar...

My solution to gastric problems (apart from PPI's) has been a glass of prune juice every day.

starshine53 in reply to helixhelix

Hi helixhelix. Gastroparesis ? I take it this means some sort paralysis of the bowel. I have not come across this condition before and will look into it,and as you say speak to my GP in due course. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

sharon6768 profile image
sharon6768 in reply to starshine53

I had gastroparesis also. It's an extremely slow emptying of the stomach into the bowel. Mine was borderline so nothing was done about it. If I recall a special diet can help, but I don't remember what it is. You can also get prescription digestive enzymes from your doctor and supposedly they help a lot. My pharmacist said not to bother with over-the-counter digestive enzymes because they could be filled with sand for all we know.

A good probiotic capsule was the answer to most of my issues. I buy them at a health food store because they are refrigerated and not cheap. Best wishes to you.

Hi dbestdeb! I have some " Inulin " prebiotic in my house which I used when my Bowel condition was much worse than now, so should be interesting now I am digesting my food .

Thanks for contributing.

Daffers123 profile image
Daffers123 in reply to starshine53

Look out for inulin...lots of people can't digest it! Anyone on FODMAPS eating plan would probably avoid it

starshine53 profile image
starshine53 in reply to Daffers123

What prebiotic would you suggest ? If Inulin is can't be digested then it should not be out there in the first place. Thanks for the tip, it might explain why it never worked first tome round for me.

Dbestdeb what are your prebiotic called?

Daffers123 profile image
Daffers123

I only found out about Inulin from another member of this great forum. I take Optibac One a Day - which agrees with me thank goodness

Its nightmare having these digestive issues. I can onl eat to live now - no curries or tasty sauces or fried or creamy stuff. Struggle with fruit and veg as cant take too much, The member who told me about inulin also recommened trying a low FODMAPS diet which I think does help. Hope you get sorted

starshine53 in reply to Daffers123

Hi Daffers ! Thaks for your reply. I am sorry to hear of difficulties with your digestive system. But are there great differences between the various prebiotic supplements in terms of affect ?Furthermore, I find Inulin creates a lot of wind ? But, to be fair,I'm sleeping better on it which I didn't expect.

Anyway thanks for your interest,I hope things get better for you.
