learning new ways to limit this disease....

Everyone is different and everyone will react differently. age is a determining factor as well as how long prior to diagnosis your bodies system had been fighting this disease. i am on several prescrips. i take the sulfasalazine , leflunomide and a low dosage of prednisone. i have moderate r/a conditions. i usually take 4 mg of prednisone at nite to take the bite out of my aching joints and if i am feeling well in the a.m., i do not take another the following p.m. before bed. does this all work? i believe it does relieve MOST of the systems while remaining on the prescrips and probably would not want to be without the prednisone (4 mg) when i need it.

What causes the flair ups is a question i had to ask myself to determine whether the medication is doing its' job or not. everyone should read up on leaky gut and causes of inflammation i.e., diet and what you can and can not eat. this is also another area where certain foods affect my inflammation levels and may not another person.

I am not preaching to anyone about taking supplements however, this disease affects every organ in your body in one form or another and i utilize the benefits of taking them along with the prescrips. the one thing that i was most impressed with doing so, is that after taking supplements for many months specifically to heal my stomach lining has helped and am no longer as much concerned about getting away with on occasion, eating a slice of pizza or a potato or even having a slice of pie should i choose to do so. this also stops the flare ups with the arthritis.

Keep in mind, that you are very vulnerable catching any infection that you come in contact with because your immune system is not functioning properly. this also knocks the heck out of your body trying to fight infection as well and on rare occasions have been supported by an m.d. to take antibiotics for extended durations. this assists in getting rid of any infections throughout your body and allows your immune system to recover.

Taking good care of yourself and not over indulging is important and i know at times, very frustrating and can get depressing.

I also know that some of you out there, not only have rheumatoid but have been diagnosed with other forms of arthritis as well so, some of the prescrips or biologic you take may also benefit other forms of the disease.

if there is anyone out there who wishes to know the various supplements i take and why, i would be more than glad to share that information with you. no, i am not any form nor profess to being a medical guru just a person affected by this debilitating disease with only western medicine attempting to LIMIT the condition.

it is important that everyone who is affected by this (mostly hereditary) disease that you learn and read as much information as you can. educate yourself so that you can know the warning signs for your children. perhaps, they will follow the same fate as you.

these open forums are wonderful because you can ask questions and find out what has worked for others which you have not tried. doctors are there to help but they have only been taught (the majority) western medicine. i thank you for reading my exerpt...

Hi, your post is very interesting, like you I am using diet as another aid to control the symptoms of RD. I take vitamin D, what other supplements do you take and do they help?

Thank you and best wishes

According to John Hopkins Arthritis Center, vitamin and mineral intake can be particularly vital for developing effective treatments for RA…..

Since there were several people who wanted to know what supplements I take

I will address this as a posting on my site address rather than individually.

Usually in the a.m. I take several supplements to cover my heart, breathing.

lung, bronchial and sinus health, COq10, bronchial sp-22 blend and reduced glutathione. These are all used to address circulation and breathing issues. Heredity deposition again, addresses high blood pressure and circulation. Rheumatoid arthritis can damage the whole body. Besides the joints, the “heart and lungs are the most commonly affected .

During the day, I take a probiotic, quercetin/bromelain and a proteolytic enzyme to heal my LEAKY GUT. Testing for this type of issue, which most of us have with r/a is a Lactulose/Mannitol Test. This will tell you whether or not your flare ups with the r/a may be caused by this condition or not and your first organ to work on getting healed to stop the inflammation attacks.

Daily, I would suggest looking into a inflammation supplement like Zyflamend which

helps support your inflammation levels throughout the body.

Since my stomach has not been working properly for years, my gall bladder, liver and kidneys have been affected. I have had attacks over the years with both kidney and bladder which I now control because of the medications which include antibiotics. I take milk thistle and herbal support for kidney and bladder. These I do not take on a regular basis anymore unless the symptoms reappear. These may show up as extreme belching, stomach cramps gas, pain and vomiting.

Your bones are also being affected by this disease including the joints and fluid sacks that surround the joints. Many times your snovial fluids become thick and unable to protect the joint. For this I take hyaluronic acid, calcium and magnesium

collagen 1 and 3 and a move free products.

General health does require a b-complex and D3 for general health and body. These are also good for leg cramps, circulation and general health.

Does it all work? Right now I am on a maintenance program rather than a continued daily dosage. Just to let you know the affects of a new supplement takes months for you to see the benefits. Keep in mind, that I usually

DO NOT take recommended dosage perhaps that is why I do not see its’ benefits early in the game but, do feel more secure in trying a new supplement that may prove to be beneficial.

I cannot stress the importance of maintaining a proper diet along with exercise of

some kind and limiting your weight. Just to let you know, I rarely drink any kind of milk, sometimes eat aged cheeses in limits and on a good day, a few bites of ice cream. Also watch you nite shades vegetables. THE KEY IS IN YOUR STOMACH! This will not stop the disease however, can help your body from flare-ups and inflammation issues and will help limit their PROGRESSION. No one knows your body better than YOU. Stay away from SALT and SUGAR ……. Also, have a test for low mineral levels like, magnesium. These affect heart &muscle function while promoting a better immune system. I hope I have helped some of you think about a better approach to this disease. Sharing any knowledge that helps someone in some way is worth the time....

Interesting isn't it that we all react so differently? I personally think that one day we will find that that there are several more different distinct variations of the disease.

I have read a lot too, and the hereditary link is weak. It seems that many scientists now think that it is the environmental triggers that are as important as the genetics. So extra important to encourage your children not to smoke, become overweight and so on if they want to avoid triggering the disease.

For me I don't get more infections - in fact less then my partner - and what I eat makes absolutely no difference to my disease activity. Although I do stick to a very good diet. I am generally in remission and rarely need to take so much as an aspirin, although I do need vit D supplemeets in winter. I am on standard triple therapy, and that works well for me. What I do avoid is prednisone, as it is a dreadful drug for me.

What you don't mention is exercise, as that and loosing weight turned my disease activity around.

i am glad to see that you have been more fortunate that many of us. I can only speak for myself gene wise, my grandmother had it, my father had it and now i have it. unfortunately, i cannot address issues that personally don't affect me. so if you have had a weight issue and choose to exercise extensively bravo. i am not quite sure whether your are a man or women which also has a different affect on the body. early diagnosis is always the key with better eating, weight and exercise programs never hurt the condition. for further information on distinction patients.ambrygen.com/gener...

Yes, I am grateful every day for being able to control this disease.

Perhaps I didn't explain clearly enough - your link describes what I was trying to say. That researchers now believe that RA is most likely to be multifactorial rather than completely hereditary.

It is a great shame that in your case there has been such a strong hereditary linkage, however this is not universal at all.

And my point about weight and exercise is merely that you can choose to take as many supplements as you like, but unless you also pay attention to adding in exercise and weight management (if needed) it could be ineffective as they are both necessary for a healthy body.

Thanks for this post. it's interesting. x

you can contact me at porches@netscape.com however i was referring to my account name 208millbrook. i do not follow a regular diet but have read a

Mediterranean diet however i do not use. I just try and stay away from the no nos as much as i can. Sometimes that does not work and I know within hours i ate something i shouldn't have. My exercise right now is very limited. I also have osteoarthritis in my upper and lower spine as well as in my hips. This makes it very difficult to do much.

Ahh . . . got it! This ( healthunlocked.com/user/280... ) is the ‘site address’ referred to. 👍

What foods have been ‘no nos’ 🚫🚫 for you, 280millbrook?

[Yes, same here. If I’d eat something that wasn’t yet a ‘safe’ food for me, I’d get an inflammatory response. 😳 😫 Oh no! 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♂️ ]

Don’t know if you might like to poke around forum (using Search 🔎 box at upper right of page) to maybe glean some additional thoughts on Osteoarthritis in Spine ( healthunlocked.com/search/o... )? [Sometime you can stumble onto gems 💎 that provide just the right insight. Have found it extremely useful learning 👩‍🏫 from other people’s experiences.]

Yes, yes . . . very much appreciate spine pain & difficulty it makes in movement & attempts at ‘exercise’. 😔 ( giphy.com/gifs/iQ8BSmjomoBB... ) [Difficult/ impossible to do much if debilitated/ frozen in pain! 😳 😧 🙃 ]

Merely Aside: If ‘Sciatica’ happens to be a spinal issue you’re encountering, there’s some gentle movements (from physiotherapist) that may help ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... scroll toward bottom of page to see links 🔗 to 4 videos 📹 ).

Wishing you the very best, 280millbrook. And, thank you again for taking time to share your insights. 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞
