Aqua jogging belts

So the other thing the rheumy suggested when I saw him on Tuesday was buying an aqua jogging belt (£14 on Amazon)

It keeps you upright in the water and you can jog without any stress on your joints.

He's just bought one for himself and is wanting to see I feel patients benefit from them. Mine arrived today so I will be giving it a go.

Ooh..that sounds like something I might do! Let me know how it goes. I go swimming once a week for cardio.

Hi Helzbells

Can you let me know how the aqua jogging belt works?

I thought that just being in the water would protect your joints while exercising? Or is that too simple? I have been asked to go swimming twice a week to help get fitter? Am doing lengths at the moment?

Good luck xx

They are amazing! I have used one for about 15 years- I used to live on a boat in the U.S. and would hop off and do pretty much a full gym routine including a great cardio 'run' upright in deep water... kept me very fit. Now of course with RA I move much more slowly and I am sadly very unfit, but it does allow me to be supported as I move and work on my core a little and absolutely no impact at all on damaged painful ankles!!! You doneed a pool with deep water and sometimes hydro pools are a bit shallow... That's great they are so cheap now - mine is looking very shabby! Good luck with it! Xxx ness

I use one of these belts for the aqua class that is really busy so that I can go in the deep water to do the exercises and keep upright. I do find that the belt (size marked small despite my size 14 body) tends to stretch once it's wet and sometimes ends up under my armpits. I have to stop and do it up tighter after the strap has stretched in the water.

The other problem is that, in my class, the exercises are intended for people who have their feet on the floor, so some have to be adapted or I sink or shoot across the pool! For example the rocking horse has to be converted into a crunch (for those who already go to a class).

This looks exciting and I hadn't ever heard of it so thank you! Quick question though: does it provide enough support to keep a non-swimmer from drowning?!

I'm going to say that this depends - people can drown in <2inches of water, depending on the circumstances. But, you can do aqua running in a beginner mode where you're in the shallow rather than deeper end of the pool. And by and large the buoyancy of the belt should keep you out of trouble.

I don't know if you're anywhere where they run aqua physio classes or aqua running? E.g., aquarunning.co.uk and aqua-physio.co.uk/aqua-running

I used to swim like a fish but now just getting all my limbs to obey, even non-weight bearing in water, is a bit worrying so what I really meant was, would an aqua belt keep me afloat in any depth of water if my feet can't touch the ground? Thank you, I'll look at the link to see what I can find in my area.
