Didn't fall asleep last night until after 7am..... Has anyone else experienced this on steroids?? I am on 20 mg of pred for 2 weeks then tapering off my dose......does the sleeplessness subside??
Anyone got any suggestions for getting to sleep? Thanks in advance!

I too am on steroids, now have to take tablets to get to sleep. Take Mirtazapine and codeine, I get a few hours. Sometimes I feel that I take one drug to cure a problem and another for the side effects.
Well I take them in the morning or should I say early afternoon when I eventually get up. Feel utterly demoralised,,,,, I was starting to feel better on steroids and even emailed work this morning to say that I may be able to go back to work in the new year. Now on the same day I have spent the entire afternoon in bed and have no energy to do anything and feel useless again due to no sleep.........gosh this is hard.....I agree it's like taking one step forward and 2 back......sorry for moaning .........I was so hopeful the last few days that my old life was coming back...........now back to being bed ridden 😥
I am so sorry to hear you're feeling worse. I think nearly everyone here has done the prednisone dance at one time or another or has been feeling better only to be knocked off their feet again. This go round I've been on them for a year because of GCA but the Actemra has allowed me to get down to 15 from 40.
Be good to yourself and do what makes you feel better. ~hugs~
What other side effects have u experienced on prednisolone? My mood is also really up and down......I am finding it hard to focus on anything......I am completely unable to give anything to my family.......it sucks......
To get the best effect and disturb the natural cortison production the least it is recommended that steroids should be taken between 7-9 in the morning.
It's frustrating isn't it? Not sleeping is the pits! Take heart, things will improve. ❤️️
First off ((((hugs)))) this whole thing is hard! I did the prednisolone dance this year about 3 times, twice for asthma (and soaked up the joy of having my joint pain ease) and once when the RA pain was getting to the point that I was in my office crying due to pain while waiting for the approvals to go through to trial the biologics.
My experience with the predinsone is to take it in the morning - like at 7 am even if it's just when you get up to go to the loo. But try to have it with some food or at least a substantial drink (milk if you do dairy). During the day the side effect of not being able to sleep can feel helpful (i call it my "go button" drug) and it's also when I found the pain reducing effects were at their peak. But taking it after midday made sleep at night almost impossible. Yes, doing it this way you will have at least one day where you feel like you've gone 24 hours without sleep, but it's worth it to reset the clock.
The other thing that made a difference for me was to get a bit of morning sunshine (I don't know where you live, that might not be easy in the UK right now!) as that helps reset the melatonin levels so that you're more likely to go to sleep when it gets dark again in the evening. When I was feeling really awful I just made myself take my morning cup of tea outside for a bit.
Good luck. Try to reset the sleep patterns and be a bit ruthless with yourself. All drugs aside, a day in bed makes sleep at night even harder, no matter what else is going on as our body isn't "tired" in the sense that we think it should be.
If prednisolone is keeping you awake, speak to your doctor, they may allow you to lower the dose until you find a level that's enough to reduce inflammation, but not too much that keeps you awake at night. 20mg would give me the same effect.
Can you set an alarm and take it at 7am ? This might help you get back in routine. Your fuzzy head might also be related to your sleep pattern (or lack of pattern!)
Hi- I found the same on 20mg at first, but as the prednisolone helped to temporarily relieve the pain during the day, I began to sleep better. I found that 30mg was the only dose that really helped my pain but usually only get 20mg and then taper off. We're all different so react differently to these meds. Maybe taper them down sooner? Talk to your reumatologist or clinical nurse for advise though. Wishing you sweet dreams 😴
I find taking 2 paracetamol at night helps me to sleep, I don't have it for pain as naproxen for that. I'm not sure why it works for me, but it does, always worth a try, oh and a very dark room. Good luck as isn't any fun not getting a good nights sleep. Hugs X
