Hi, is it possible/advisable to take both oral steroids and local injection steroid at the same time?

I do. I’m steroid dependent, and have got my dose down to 7.5mg a day, but I also have steroid injections in my joints. Last month I had both shoulders and one knee done.

yes ( presume GP or Rheumy advised). I am just Going down this route and was told sometimes it can be a better therapeutic outcome.

I can’t add much more as waiting to do face to face with my GP after a quick discussion this week and this was his wording.

Yes definitely. I’ve been on steroids 12yrs, and often have joint injections. Like Helen I’m steroid dependant, having developed severe adrenal insufficiency due to long term steroids.

We cannot advise on something like that….it would depend on what your rheumy team advise is the best treatment for you.

Hi agedcrone, I was asking a general question rather than seeking advice on my own personal situation.

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a general rule in RA …what suits A will not necessarily suit B.

Personally I cannot take steroids in any form…but that obviously…is just me!

Although, if it was a 'no, not possible' then that would apply to everyone right?

Not necessarily. It could be a no for one person because of their specific circumstances.

looks like I am going down a very similar path very , adrenals have basically packed up after 9 years on pred .

It certainly is possible and in my case, as I’ve been steroid dependant for 34 years, sometimes essential when I’m flaring and nothing else will bring down the inflammation.

The advisable bit of your question will be up to your rheumatologist’s opinion as to whether you need an extra boost.

That is definitely a question for your rheumatology team. What right for one person won’t necessarily be right for the next. Will depend on lots of things including how long you’ve been taking oral steroids and what dose you are taking.

I was only wondering whether it was a thing in principle, rather than whether it was right for me, but thanks for replying.

As with so many things to do with RA there are no ‘one size fits all’ type principles. There are just too many varying factors.
