hello i am mary are u getting folic acid with your injections that does help with the nausea take one tablet every day except on the day u inject i was on it 8 years hope this helps worth a try
My rheumy also told me not to take the folic acid on the day of Mtx. I take folic acid everyday except the day of mtx. I suggest you check with your rheumy again.
Poor you, nausea & sickness can be an effect of MTX, a common one, but for it to be so instant I think is unusual. I've been on MTX 7 years & have found taking 5mg folic acid every day except the day I inject keeps nausea away but previously if my dose is increased from 17.5mg to 20mg I suffer for it. So, increasing your folic acid may help or maybe, like me, you don't tolerate the dose you're on. You really need to speak with your Rheumy team, being as you are now must be so disruptive not to say wearing. I hope your team are understanding Ali & together you find a solution, no you shouldn't have to live with it.
I too spent 36 hours vomiting and feeling awful after injecting MTX. Solution - STOP IT, Not worth the side effects. My rheumy agreed and when I see her next we will discuss alternatives. Life is too short to put up with the side effects
My advice would be that it may not be the MTX for a reaction that quick but a reaction to the medium the MTX is mixed with. I say this as had a reaction, almost instant, to tetanus injections so never finished the course as the hospital stopped them. Fortunately was in hospital as could not breathe.
So I'd ring the RA consultant and talk to them but don't forget some side effects do wear off and it might take a few more weeks so it could be worth perserving for a few more weeks. Not a popular view really but the side effects of LEF are awful for good while then go. So please talk to your doctor before assuming it is the MTX. If it is then they can talk about alternatives. But then they may also have unwanted side effects too.
I am now going into my fourth week so increasing to 4 tablets a day. So far I've had no nausea or sickness. I have been very careful to take tablets with food and I normally try to take them with milk. Not sure if that's making a difference.
Is it just the injections that make you feel sick or were you like that with the tablets? As if it is then that supports Medway lady's theory about it being the medium.
Either way tho', each of us has to find the point between giving drugs enough time for side effects to settle down and throwing in the towel. There are other drugs, so don't persevere longer than you can cope with.
Hi I am on 20 mg injection weekly. I have found side effects lessen with time. Also nurse suggested increasing folic acid during rest of week which helped I am on 4 X 5 mg folic acid
Hi Ali, I usually feel sickly as soon as I take my injection too, but I changed to taking it in an evening then I go straight to bed. I do have nausea the next day which sometimes isn't too bad, I would say more like morning sickness!!!
I used to feel really sick for two days but my body seems to have got used to it! (I've been on it 6 yrs)
When I was on methotrexate tablets I felt nauseous but, when I went onto injections I felt very sick & not well for a couple of days. When I told RA specialist he said I was wrong & that there were less side effects with the injection! Pardon me for knowing how I feel about my body!
Hello I used to feel really rough straight after metho inj too,and into next day. Ended up hating that time every week. So the inj then hurt too. After several months I ended up back to metho tablets. good luck
Hi Ali, I take MTX orally. I started taking MTX last Nov. I had awful nausea. I now take folic acid every day except MTX day. It did the trick but it took a couple of weeks of taking it 6 days a week to kick in. I looked into why you get nausea from MTX. And as I understand it the MTX triggers the nausea 'button' in the brain.
