Hi Deejojo.

I had a carpal tunnel op approx 20 yrs ago.

I had it done on my elbow and my wrist on my left arm and hand, under a general anaesthetic and it was a relatively quick op.I went home the following day as it was a late afternoon op.

There was a little discomfort after the op but I had standard painkillers which were adequate and certainly no pain as bad as the carpal tunnel pain beforehand. The wounds were well bandaged and it was quite awkward to dress and shower etc for a few days, especially with my elbow bandaged as well.If yours is just on your wrist it should be a whole lot easier.

Don't worry about it,it is a simple op,minimal discomfort and you will be a whole lot better afterwards.

Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I've just left a reply on your other post updating us Denise so scrap that. I'm pleased he's not messing about, it's obviously bad enough to go straight to the op, that's what my Consultant did, referred me to Neurology & a few weeks later the op was done. Don't worry that it's done under local anaesthetic it's quite normal & you can't see anything, well I couldn't anyway, a sheet was place between me & the bit they're working on. It's not a very long op, probably about 20 minutes or so. They'll wrap it up well & tell you to keep your arm raised, mine was put in a sling for a week, I was prescribed co-codamol 30/500mg (I wasn't on them at the time). I saw the Neurologist again a week later & had the dressing changed, after that I was able to lower the arm & another week later the dressing & bandage was removed. I've a tiny scar a couple of cm long which has mingled in with the life line on my palm so not noticeable at all. I've had no trouble since, oh I have but that was trigger finger, same hand but assured unrelated though both are a result of inflammation.

Good luck, you'll feel the benefit straight away though it will sting a little once the anaesthetic wears off but that's quite normal. x

Certainly worth having it done. I had general for one and local for the other, both were ok and immediate relief. The worst bit for me was when they tightened the thing to stop the blood supply, can't think of the name for it, but it was just uncomfortable for a few seconds. I couldn't see anything although I was asked if I wanted to watch the op on screen when I had the local, no thanks! I too had my arm in a sling for a week and then dressing for a week. You have to take it easy for 4-6 weeks, no heavy lifting etc. I just have small scars on both hands that are hardly noticeable, I had trigger finger release at the same time. X
