Mtx and spots on scalp

Does anybody else have problems with sore itchy spots on scalp, I've been on mtx 20mg weekly for almost a year now. My ra is a lot better and under control, but just the problem with the sore scalp. Does anybody else have this with mtx. I would appreciate any help with suggestions and if anybody else has the same problem 😕 thanks xx

Hi LadyB. I have been on mtx now for 11 weeks and am on 20mg. I too have began to get spots on my head and scalp some of which are sore. Im currently losing lots of hair also every time I wash my hair so only try and do this a few times a week rather than every day. Im still not 100% but am getting there slowly. Cant really give any advice on the spotty problem, guess it is a shared side effect of mtx

Hi tinat3 thanks for your reply. I think you must be right if you have the same problem to since taking mtx then it probably is just one of those side affects we have to put up with. Keep going with your meds you will feel better, I've been on mtx nearly a year now. Better the side effects than the ra 😀x

I take it too, but it causes me cold sores, low immune system, wounds that are hard to heal, but they can prescribe you some special shampoo, for those sores in your scalp, I never thought the treatment for RA would be harder than the RA.. Good Luck!!

Thanks empathy1 for your reply, I know what you mean about the low immune system with the meds, it doesn't help with the side effects, I'm just hoping my rheumy will start me on a different med as I don't think mtx is doing for me with this rash. I will have to wait and see what my rheumy nurse says in a couple of weeks, thanks for the good luck. Lady B😊x

I got spots on my scalp as well. It turned out to be actinic keratosis and needed treatment to stop it becoming cancerous. I would go see Dr asap just to be on safe side. I did do some research and it does seem that mtx does cause this problem for some people

Hi norton 47 thanks for advice will get it checked with gp in case, but I didn't start with this until I was taking mtx. I think it may be something to do with the mess as I also get a purple rash down my face and forehead to. Thanks for your reply. Lady B 😀x

See a dermatologist. Could be precancerous actinic keratosis which, untreated, could lead to squamous cancer. Squamous cancer can invade other organs. I am undergoing treatment now for acute actinic keratosis.

Have had scalp inflammation for 2 years . Please see my post. Just started new RA medicine. Hoping it will help scalp!!! I feel compelled to touch scalp to relieve discomfort. LOVE tea tree shampoo. Very soothing! All the best,Usha

I’m newly diagnosed with Psoriatic Rhematoid, I’ve taken 4 doses MTX so far, I’ve got spots on my scalp and my hair is falling out? The good news is that my Psoriasis seems to be taking a holiday!

I started on Biotene for my hair. Hope it helps!

I was diagnosed with RA in August 2018 and I`m on 20 mg of methotrexate like you. I`m more than grateful to be in remission due to MTX. But it has brought thr scalp problem and the doctors say "wear a hat" I use an E45 shampoo and if you have a better treatment, I`d br grateful to know. Thanks - Whitegate

yes! I have the same issue! I thought I read somewhere that it can cause sore spots on the scalp but I can’t seem to find it now.
