Opening Jars :)

My RA has grabbed both hands which makes life a little more challenging lol.......so thought I'd pass this on. If you need to open a jar of something like cooking sauce, just run it under the hot tap for a couple of minutes and it really does open with little or no effort. Please pass it on......anyone else got any little tips to make life easier?

Hi thanks for the tip I bought a six in one opener from Amazon I find that helpful for opening bottles and jars.

Hi

When my hands were bad I cut up pieces of that non slip matting that you can buy for around £1. Kept a piece in kitchen and one in bathroom......works a treat for opening bottles/jars etc x

Hiya. An old rubber glove (unused ones don't grip so well) & silicone "duck beak" type things for gripping grill pans, as mine don't have handles they're part of the shelves in the ovens, as I find oven gloves/towels dangerous as I can't feel or grip through the padding.

I have a nifty plastic thing that levers the lid and pops the seal making for easy opening. Has made life so much easier. This is what it looks like:

I have one of those too and it is great.

Me too - I'd probably starve without it! I still have trouble with popped jars and sometimes, especially if they've been stored for a little while. The hot water trick doesn't always work for me but my OT gave me a piece of silicone fabric that grips the lid like glue and makes it much easier to shift.

Hi mistymeana,

to be honest with you, I don't have RA myself but I still find opening some jars difficult! That little gadget is a godsend!

For new jars best thing is a "jar key" device. You lever up the edge of the lid to break the vacuum. Just make sure you aim between the lugs on lid. You should hear the air rush in.

Safer and easier in my opinion than using hot water.

I stab through the middle of the lid with a sharp knife. One quick jab and it opens easily. PS - Watch your hands!!

Don't think I'll be trying that one. My non grippy hands are rubbish & I could see me having a visit to A&E if my hand slipped down the knife handle to the blade! :( My good old rubber glove seems to do the trick. Plus of course the seal has then been broken if it's something like a jam jar & not using all the contents at once.
