Having my first steroid injection today, daft question but where is it injected? SLE and Sjogrens.

Morning All, feel a bit silly asking but as i've resisted the steroid injections all other times I'm not sure how they work! I'm going in for the injection today, to generally help (so i hope) with the constant ache/pain in my legs and arms, also the overall exhaustion. Various other physical symptoms but its the pain i hope to ease. Where will I be injected?! (arms/legs/bum?!). Thanks in advance.

Hello and please don't ever feel silly for asking anything on here! The "general" steroid injections (as opposed to those for specific joints) are - in my experience - usually in the bum. Not very dignified I know but hey, if it helps... I have found them to be helpful in the past and I really do hope you find the same.

Hi there...hope all goes well....I always found the steroid injections work really well and I always had mine injected into the bottom...they always worked for my inflammation...and lasted a few months for me...I always looked forward to having a steroid injection as I knew it was going to help ease the swelling inflammation and pain for me....good luck hope it works for you Nicola :-)

Thanks for your speedy responses! Yep bum is find by me so no concerns now! It was more a question of practicality as I'm popping in whilst at work so needed to plan both a work and hospital strip-off friendly outfit! X

Hi, I've had them and they do seem to help. In the bum!!! Not painful in any way...I hope it helps you. Maryx

They're IM [in the muscle] so as the glutes are the largest muscles in the body that's where they normally go:-}

You should get some relief within about 3-4 days - but be aware of the 'steroid bounce' where you suddenly feel so much better that you overdo it!

Hope it helps,

Cece x

Yes, definitely beware of overdoing it when you start feeling better. Also, some folk get a short-lived "steroid flare" where you feel worse for up to about 24 hours before getting a whole lot better.

Thanks for that, really useful info. Injection went fine, in my bum as predicted by others. Here's hoping for some relief!

Hi, i have my injection in the top of my leg, had it in the bum first time and it didnt work, but the second one i had in the top of my leg, and i must say it worked a treat, not long had my third one and again brilliant, my nurse has said thou that she wont give me another one she is going to up my mtx see if that help because you carnt depend on steroid injections to control pain, but yea it was brilliant for me. The pain in my knees have gone so has the swelling in my ankles, just need this bloody tooth ache to go and all will be fine for a bit, so im off to the dentist, good luck.

Not a daft question at all....in fact I was looking on here as I was about to ask the same thing as I have just received a letter stating I should have an IM Steroid injection so now I know not only what it means but more about how it will happen!

Many thanks...off to find my nicer knickers for the appointment :-)
