Woke up today to find I can't eat because my teeth don't meet! How weird. I must have a flare up in my jaw joints! They really ache.
Anyone else had this? Any handy tips?
Or just stick to soup till it clears!

Hi Phoebe, don't think my teeth have ever met, but during flares my jaw does become very painful and I'm unable to talk much or eat. So sadly it looks like it's soft food's only for you i.e. soup, yogurt and jelly and ice cream, at least for a few days anyway.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hey Phoebe,
Yeah i've had this a couple of times now, it usually only lasts a couple of days then then rights itself.. the inability to yawn is frustrating isnt it? its as if your body knows you cant yawn so keeps trying... just because!!
If your at home lying with a hotwater bottle against your jaw can feel REALLY good!!
hope it settles soon.
Joy
Thank you both. I used to give my children jelly and ice cream when they felt poorly. Now its my turn.
I am at home and will make time this afternoon for a wallow with a hot water bottle.
Painkillers helped a bit but its the "dislocation" sort of feeling that is so unsettling!
Cheers!
Hope it eases soon, Its not a nice feeling xx take care

Hi Phoebe, Yes, I have had this happen a few times when I was going through a bad period with flares. I couldn't open my mouth to eat anything so, like you, it was soups with a straw. I went to the GP but there is nothing they can do. Fortunately the longest it lasted was about a week.
Hope you are feeling better very soon,
Jo
Hi Phoebe, yes I get this too. In fact, one such episode is only just beginning to go down having lasted 4 days so far! The longest yet. I find one side of my jaw or the other is affected, rarely both together. I find I cannot close my mouth on the affected side and the jaw hinge by my ear hurts as well and feels swollen if I touch it.
I usually eat on the other side until it settles down again although anything too hard to chew is difficult. Sometimes even toast is difficult to eat when it is really painful so soups are very good and filling.
I did mention it to my consultant some time ago and he confirmed it is the RA which causes it and the drugs we are on should help to control it. I take a Nurofen which seems to help the inflammation settle down.
Hope you get back to normal eating soon. LavendarLady x
Thanks for all your help. I am back to normal (whatever that means these days!) again. It was a gradual process, and Diclofenac helped, but it was only yesterday that I noticed that everything was back where it should be!
