God taurean7 - ya must have read my mind, its all I have been thinking about the whole weekend as have a bit of dilemma, no word on the start date of the job in the hospital and haven't heard anything from the agency since the middle of January but know a few others still waiting on a start date in other areas such as nursing.

On Friday evening, I received a job advert alert for a Commis/Trainee Chef in the restaurant where I done my work experience when doing the Professional Cookery course, know the head chef well and got on good with all the kitchen team when I was there, it says on the advert experience is essential, don't know whether to apply for it or not as it would be on the lower scale of fine dining and likely want someone with experience which I don't have other than with them for the 40 days. It says to apply by ringing or emailing, it will be a Wednesday to Sunday job 14:00-22:00 (sometimes later if busy) - what I would learn if lucky enough to get the job would be invaluable whereas the hospital is more of a cook job for all patients in the wards which would be sociable hours Monday to Sunday (5 days) 09:15 to 18:15 but its a waiting game with them when I start.

My plan tomorrow is to ring the agency to see if there is any indication when I would be starting, very likely not to get an answer and if this is the case, thinking of emailing my CV etc... on to the restaurant, or should I ring and speak to owner instead, don't want to contact the head chef as will be putting him in an awkward position I feel...

You're not waffling, and I can see your dilemma.

You must put your needs first Roisin. It's unacceptable the way the hospital has left you dangling. I worked in nursing for 28 years in the UK and here, and sadly it doesn't surprise me. The hospital owes you an answer.

You've nothing to lose and everything to gain by looking into that restaurant job. I would go with your instincts as to whether to contact the owner or the chef, our gut usually tells us the truth.

Do you feel what you would learn would outweigh the unsociable hours. How important is the challenge of extending your skills to you. How would the hours impact your family life? I've worked those hours, and as a family we adapted, but it's not for everyone.
