Have you tried reading A Carr's book - it will help. To answer you question - yes it does but you need to be prepared and have the things in place that will support you. :)

hi Sandra and welcome to possible the best source of support i have ever found.

YES it does get easier, the first 3 days are definately the worst. the once day four is beginning to pass you start to notice things like smells!! some ar good:) and some not so:eek: but it does make you realise ealy on how much difference it makes.

come on here, rant, shout, cry or get a virtual hug, there is always someone on to support you. Some are full of amazingly powerful thought prevoking comments and without them, I would probably be back on the evil nicodemon.

keep strong and you will get through today and it will get easier.

are you using any NRT ? or cold turkey?

Thanks for your replies, Once again this morning the first thing I want is my tea and a cig. Instead I came on here and hoped someone had responded to my post. Thank you. After 30 years of smoking I decided quit for a number of reasons. Family, Health, and a promise I had made to someone. Ultimately this is for me. Didn't realize how smoking had taken over my whole life/personality. To answer some of your questions, no I am just chewing nic gum, no other aids. I keep fighting with myself saying just take one puff and it wont hurt. The only thing stopping me is I don't want to have to go through this all over again. Im worried Im going to fail,

... Ultimately this is for me...

... and good for you Sandra; I've said as much before, but there really is no better reason! It's your quit, it's about you. All the marvellous benefits to yourself, physically and mentally, and to your relationships with those you love, will follow naturally in the coming days, weeks and months, now that you've made that committment to yourself. There will be tough times on the journey and there will be great times too. It doesn't take very long before the good times start to hugely outweigh the bad.

Read, read and then read some more - before you know it you'll have new found energy and a confident spring in your step :)

Hi Sandra

I am sure it has all been said but...........im on day 4 and knew i was going to see 2 people today that smoked, all the way there i was thinking just one puff...............i didnt do it. I have been reliably told by the great people on here it will get easier. I too always had a cig while the kettle boiled for my first coffee of the day. I still think about it as soon as I wake up but I pop in a lozenge and have bought myself some of those 'healthy' yogurt drinks, the little ones. I now have that while the kettle boils.

Well done on your decision to quit....stay on here, we will beat this and be free from nic

Well Duurrrrr:D - of course you didn't do it; you're a non-smoker now. And as such, these silly thoughts have NO PLACE in your head. New mindset firmly in place:)

I failed

I caved today and feel horrible, I feel like I have let myself and everyone who loves me down.

Ok so you had a slip up. Did you feel amazing? Did it taste good? Was it worth it?

You said you feel horrible so pick yourself up, start again and next time you'll be able to say "no, i caved last time and it made me feel rubbish so im not doing it again!!!!"

We're all here with you, keep on plodding onwards

just what Tic said^^^

you failedlast time, so move on, you will be stronger this time,

analyse the situation you were in;

why did you think you could have just one,

where were you?

Who were you with?

when during the day was it?

what did you gain?

finally how do you feel about smoking today?

The outcome and decision to quit again will ultimately be yours but I feel confident that you will get there and be so very much stronger.

You may have let people down for those 10 minutes, but you have the rest of your life to make it up to them smoke free :)

First off don't go beating yourself up about it, there's no point - learn from it instead. You feel horrible for caving, so you *want* to quit and you will. Pretty much everyone here has done the same thing as you (I have far too many times) but the important thing is not to let it stop you from quitting!!

I bet that fag tasted disgusting, they were bad enough when we were used to them

Anyway, have a think about your options - especially with NRT so you've got backup for when the crave hits again, pick yourself up and carry on. It was a blip, that's all :)

Hi Sandra,

Been there, done that. Bet most of us have. I was 12 days into my quit and I quite enjoyed it but started another quit straight away. No point in beating yourself up. It's in the past and today is a new beginning.

I tried CT and lasted 2 whole days without a single crave and then the sky fell in. Luckily I had some patches just in case. Use anything that works for you.

Slipped

Thanks everyone for your posts. You are right this is just a blip and yes that cig tasted gross. I actually cried. Unfortunately, after analyzing this I think that after smoking for 30 years (never tried to quit ever before) I wasn't prepared for the life change cold turkey. Need to get my crap together and I will be back at it. Hope I don't wait to long

Hey Sandra, I too had been smoking over 30 years. I wouldnt have been able (i dont think) to have given up without the patches despite the massive help of this forum. I know that one puff/cig and I would be straight back to 20/day

have a few days to think about how you can succeed, maybe patches are the way for you rather than the gum? maybe champix? everyone is different and needs different physical support, for the mental support we will be here when you need us.

Whether you take those few days smoking is up to you but you may find it harder if you are chucking 20 cigs aday into your body.

Good luck with what ever you choose and hopefully we will see the stronger Sandra back here very soon.xxx

Oh Sandra, I know that feeling all too well :(

Please don't upset yourself too much - what matters is you didn't enjoy the fag!!

Like the others have said, some kind of NRT is probably the best option for you - and you *can* quit!!

Have used patches, gum, tried lozenges and use an e-cig (get the feeling I'm throwing everything at it this time? :p) and would definitely recommend patches as a first stop. They really helped me, and am sure I'd not have lasted a week without them!!

Your support, even though we don't know one another, is so helpful and means more than I can say. Right now Im going to digest and get my hands on that book. Doctor has suggested the patch, I have a fear of them for some reason, like ill have a heart attack or something. Totally irrational I know. On a mission to set this in place and be more prepared next time.

you are welcome anytime hun!

bit confused about the heart attack comment as there is more crap and chemicals in a fag (hope I havent missed something on the patient info sheet) well 2 weeks later I havent had one and at the hosp on tues with patches my blood pressure was perfectas were my oxygen levels so dont be scared of the patches. they could be what you need and they are instant-ish as in you could start them today.

come back and see you when you are ready xx
