Day 1 has inevitibly dawned and thus the adventure begins
This is probably quit attempt number 101 for me (or at least feels like it) and I am entering into it with fear, based entirely on a poor track record.
I have been an SS (secret smoking) operative for too long and at the very least, I'm looking forward to saying goodbye to the fuss and shenanigans involved in maintaining that routine.
My current goal is to get to forum Day 4-7: further than I normally get in any quit attempt. I'm armed with my patches and an empty inhilator to suck on if things get desperate! I've given it a try and sucking up fresh air sends quite a pleasant sensation to the head, you just have to overlook the sounding like Darth Vader bit! I know it's a tad unconventional but it makes me laugh and if I can inject some sense of humour into this then I'll know I'm progressing well. Unless I happen to inhale a passing midge, which wouldn't be funny at all.
I refuse to dwell today on feelings of dread, will save that for the next 2 days, which is when I do suffer (normally).
Hoping for the best,
Gillie x

Good luck on getting to days 4-7............that's how I did it aming first for day 2 then moving up and I am now in week 3. I have never gone longer than 24 hours without a ciggie before.
You CAN do this..............believe me if I can you can
Just wanted to say thank you for the feedback. Obviously being a secret smoker, actually getting support from people who don't know you need it, is impossible. So these little boosts go a long way in the process. I've never been an easy quitter but then I finally acknowledge that for a year and a half, especially smoking some low quantities, I have kept myself experiencing a lot of withdrawl and the idea of only enduring one more process is very appealing indeed.
Witchety grubs? Never never never! Though you have come up with something... to effectively imagine a cigarette is a witchety grub = abstinence for life. Wonder if I could be hypnotised with that idea? Hmmmm...
Hiya Gillie, congrats and good luck on your quit. Don't sit around moping.. emm moaping? wotever.. you know what I mean ;P If you mope then you'll just make it worse for yourself. Got a dog? Go for some nice walks and keep yourself busy. Escaping smoking is well worth it and your dog'd be happy too.
Once you get past the first few days it starts to get MUCH easier, then as time goes on you will hardly think about it, because you will be really enjoying being smokefree and the need will become hardly noticeable. The physical craving parts really don't last that long at all and aren't too bad with patches (I have inhalator, lozenges, chewing gum , sweets you name it!) Just get through it and you'll be on to all the good stuff.
I know.....being a secret smoker makes it hard when you need support. My husband is quitting too but he doesn't like to talk about it. So I come here quite often for support and to vent! Secret Smokers unite OOPs...I mean secret EX_smokers unite!
You can make it to day 4-7 and beyond! Esp since you won't have to jump through hoops any more to hide being a smoker! That is probably one of the things that really keeps me going.

quit 7: Day 28: 39 yr old mom of 4: 24 yr ex-smoker 20-30 a day
What a breath of fresh air to be out in the open. Have also noticed the pleasant effects that deep breaths of fresh air produce! Hankering after dirty poison air seems crazy when I think about it.
Lovely to hear from you Margareth, better late than never and I didn't think ill of your absence, I doubt anyone begrudges your life outside of the forum, though I'm sure everyone is equally glad that you're a part of it.
Again, thanks to all of you who have taken the time to support me... the gesture is entirely reciprocated and I wish you all continued success
