Week 2...could it be! Keep weight gain at bay?

I am having a hard time believing I am beginning week 2.....and yet there is another part of me that feels like I am cheating by using the gum. I know it might sound rediculous....but I can't help it. Knowing that my body is still addicted to the nicotine is annoying me!

On the way home from book club tonight was the first time I felt like...wow I would really love to sit in the garage....drink a beer and enjoy a smoke. Yes it passed in about 1 minutes.....and 1 peice of nico gum! It still was a pretty strong urge...the strongest I have had since I quit.

I have been good about not replacing the habit with food but I know there will still be some weight gain.....just from the metabolism regulating itself. Other than exercise does anyone have any suggestions to help keep this at bay? I go to the gym regularly so I am doing what I can there. I eat pretty decent....but I had lost 24 pounds over the last year and I admit I am worried about gaining.

Thanks..

Hanna

Hi Hanna

Is it weight you're afraid of gaining or excess fat?

If you don't want to gain weight, just stop eating. It'll fall off.

If it's excess fat you're worried about, try doing some weight training. This will up your metabolism and yes you will likely gain weight but it will be muscle and not fat, so you'll look slimmer.

OK, I know you said ideas other than exercise. SO ... how about looking at more wholefoods? I always thought people who ate wholefoods (ie foods with a few additives as poss) and smoked were a bit daft ... they didn't want to EAT extra chemicals but were happy to smoke them. Anyway, a diet rich in wholegrains, fruit and veggies, with limited amounts of fat and refined sugar (don't cut everything out, we all need a treat now and then) won't make anyone fat.

Also, if you find you're eating to replace smoking, ask yourself WHY you want to eat. I find I used to boredom smoke, then I boredom ate (still do), now I'm trying to see if there is anything ELSE I can do to alleviate that boredom other than eating (or smoking). Basically, each time you go to eat something, ask yourself if you're truly hungry. Is your tummy rumbling? If not, chances are you're not really that hungry. So if you're not hungry ask yourself what you're feeling and do something to deal with that feeling. Food won't fix boredom, frustration, anger ... food just fixes hunger.

Final thing, when you are eating (from hunger) really slow down your eating. Now your taste buds have improved take your time to really notice how the food tastes and feels in your mouth. Try to eat without any distractions (TV, reading, Internet) so you can give the food and your tummy your full attention. This will avoid you overeating which is really why people get fat.

Hope this helps! I don't know anyone who eats wholefoods, only eats when they're hungry and stops when full, who is fat :)

Well done you

Hi Hana,

Well done to you hun.

DON'T feel guilty about the gum. PRAISE yourself for what you have acheived & that is not smoking. You will come off the gum when you are ready.

I am still using my Lozenges & am in no rush to stop. I am not gonna put myself through any more pain than I have to ;)

Love Gaynor xx

Day 8 7th quit

Hi Hanna

Your post could have been mine !!! I also am worried about weight gain as have recently lost over a stone. I also have been quit just my first week so I think we must be quit twins lol. I have so far tried not to change my meals etc but have had some sweeties to suck and have now trying to rely on ordinary chewing gum. I am weighing myself etc and if the weight starts going on I will hit the treadmill at the gym. We are doing the best thing for our health etc, I am sure we can win the war with weight too. Would be good to know how you go on.

Hi Hanna and everyone

A late browse on the site just to see if others are doing ok or struggling. I think these sites are very good for keeping our fingers occupied - just think how bad things would be without the web for company.

Well I have completed the first day of my second week and can honestly say that for the most part it is just the old habit I am fighting and have had few really bad cravings (bad one when i was angry a few days ago).

I googled some info re weight gain and quit smoking and it seems that half a stone is usual due to metabolism slowing and appetite increasing!!!

I keep looking at smokers and often they are slimmer - but also more wrinkled!

Good luck everyone
