my first day here. today at 12.30pm i am going to give up smoking. i smoke an average of twenty a day, a little less these last couple of days as i have the flu and a chest infection-am hating every cigarette at the moment but it still hasn't stopped me from smoking even to give my lungs a rest while i'm sick.
So...i decided to stop. Well i decide to stop every day, and do for a few hrs, and then panic and have to buy some. can't even count the amount of times i've run water over them, gone a few hours, then anxiety sets in and i rush to the shop. i have had about 6 serious attempts over ten yrs. the most i've ever gone is one day short of 3 weeks.
this probably sounds garbled but i'm finding it hard to concentrate because the fear is creeping in already. i'm gonna go now and try and mentally prepare myself, only have under an hour and a half left of smoking. i hate them when i smoke, but when i don't....well i guess every smoker and ex smoker knows the rest of that sentence!
Would really appreciate any advice on how to overcome fear, of failing or succeeding, i'm not sure which. maybe both. Crazy mind, a smokers!
Ok, well, talk later!

I remember all too well smoking while not well and the hating it.
I believe the fear of stopping is 100 times worse than the stopping. That feeling that it is going to be so bad that I couldn't possibly go there is not true. Dont go into it with that thought in mind tell yourself you can do it and do it.
I am sure you know that you cant be addicted to a drug for years without feeling something when you give it up, but the help here and the literature available for reading will get you through. If you go to perhaps month 2 or 3 here there are excellent websites at the bottom of their signatures to help you to get the message about addiction, you could read some before you do your stop it would definitely help.
You will find plenty of people on here with loads of experience and they will be along shortly. There are also many of us who quit recently too. The support is wonderful and really adds to your own strenths.
The important bit is to make the decision to quit and to act on it - and you've done that. That's brilliant. Try not to think of it as giving something up, or depriving yourself of something, or it being a sacrifice - You are choosing freedom from a debilitating drug.
Thanks for your replies. Good to hear from people that are going through this quitting business too.
So i quit at 12pm. it's now been 2 hours and 38 mins. had a bit of a craving after lunch, but nothing too bad. felt very positive when i started, albeit scared. right now i don't feel much, just trying not to think about it too much.

I am at day 23 not smoking, it can be done, I have had a few tears along the way, but I know it makes sense, don't we all. Very very good luck to you. Jeanx
Well done to you for making this decision. You are already over the worst part by making the decision and already in a much better place by deciding to share your quit on here. This forum put me in a brilliant place mentally to start my quit and posting on here helped me to reinforce it. Then helping others helps me stay quit. Try to see it as a positive thing, embrace the craves and try not to panic. I tell myself I am a nicotine addict and I choose not to smoke. It makes it easier to deal with in my head. Check out the links. They really do help. In particular, have a read of these two. My favorites!
