To those who are thinking "Just One.........."

Quite a few people on here just now are having that

"i wonder how just one would taste"

or

"i think i'd like to have just one ciggie to see how i'd handle it" moment.

For the sake of your quit, whether it is one week, one month or even longer....

.....DON'T DO IT!!!!!

There is no such thing as just one.

Read the following links

whyquit.com/joel/Joel_04_16...

whyquit.com/joel/Joel_04_18...

and you will realise why it is important to Never have that one puff.

A lot of people on here have now taken up the "educate yourself and read, read , read" method to quitting which is brilliant because it does seem to be a major part of a successful quit.

I just hope that the message is not becoming slightly diluted because it is so common now....(just a thought!)

There are many places to read, e.g. whyquit, woofmang etc. but its not just the reading thats important, its the UNDERSTANDING thats important.

Anyway, lecture over and i wish everyone a happy and smoke free new year ;) :D :D

Well said, John - we miss your words of wisdom on this forum. Please don't be a stranger!

The education message will be pushed by me as frequently as possible, I see it as absolutely vital - and while there is a danger of some people not taking to it fully and not finding their own answers.... the message is getting out to more people which can only be good!

To put it as simply as I know how - understanding YOUR addiction (Why you smoke) is the key to finding the best way for YOU to quit.

My method will not work for you... but the way I found my method will work for you.

Read everything you can find, and then read it again. Absorb and digest. Sooner or later, YOUR truth will click like a key in a lock. When that happens, it's job done!

When I smoked my last fag on 16th March 2008 at one minute to midnight (ahem) I wrote out what it tasted like on a piece of paper and all the feelings it brought up.

All I remember was it burnt my throat and tasted mingin. The whole thing is an illusion start to finish, even after 13 years of smoking it still hit the back of my throat with too much force.

When I find myself fondly remembering what it was like to smoke i whip out that piece of paper. Saved me many times.

Good luck everyone ;)

John, Whilst I agree with your sentiment of not having another, and I may be a lone voice here. I'm actually glad I had the ONE. I realise I may be in the vast minority here - but the not knowing would have bugged me for ever. Now I know it did not make me feel better and wasn't some mystical high or anything. It was a normal run of the mill smoke. Not special, not tempting enough for me to want anotherone after it.

I subscribe to Stuart's theory in that it will not work for everyone, but sometimes it does "put to bed" all those nagging thoughts of what am I missing out on.

I'll apologise if this all sounds a bit off message, but it DID help me. I'm not trying to be controversial ;)

Just joined this Forum

I've just joined this forum today in the hope I can finally quit. I've done it all before, gave up for 10 years then started again, gave up for 8 years and started again and been smoking now for 5 years. Done patches, cold turkey and the Alan Carr book. I fell into the trap of "what would one taste like and what harm would it do" - well believe me it does a lot of harm. One leads to two which soon leads to a pack of 10 and you try every which way to convince yourself that you are not a serious smoker but when it gets to the point of panic when there is only one ciggie left in the packet you know you are addicted and you have to get out of the trap.

Well here I am, determined to become a non smoker. Put patch on this morning, if I am honest I have to say I would have given anything for my first ciggie of the day but quite proud that I put it back in the packet and stuck my patch on instead, came into work and resisted the temptation to go outside for a fag with my colleagues and will busy myself at "smoke break" so if you see me popping up everywhere on this Forum its because I need the help!!!

Hey I feel for ya there needing to keep yourself busy, my whole day is literally one massive smoke break! I'm on here to basically keep myself occupied, trying to tell myself not to have "just one". Because we all know what happens, as John has already been over

And I haven't even quit yet!
