Having been a smoker for the best part of 40 years I've now been stopped now for almost 9 months. During this time I've had so many illnesses, the worst of which is that my voice keeps going hoarse. If I try to clear my throat it usually makes it worse.
I've seen my GP about this and she tells me that she thinks it's all the cr*p coming up off my lungs (I have no cough!) and that it can take up to 12 months for this to get better.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or am I being fobbed off by my GP?

I am exactly the same! I've been stopped for almost four months, and my voice comes and goes like that too. I try my pathetic little cough but it takes ages to clear it. Sometimes I don't bother, cos it sounds kinda sexy ! ;)
I am assured it is nothing to worry about, but I never went through any "lungs clearing " stage at the start of my quit
LOL Jude, It's just my way of dealing with it - it's quite annoying actually, and probably not in the least bit sexy, but hey, we can all think what we want right?

Yeah me!!! we must have the same doctor
Like yourself I have been smoking almost 40 years - visited my doctor recently as I have a really terrible chest, I told him I had NEVER had such a bad chest even whilst smoking, he came up with a load of feeble excuses and ended up prescribing me an asthma spray.*&$%*
BUT - the worse part was when I say it will go away won't it - and he shrugged his shoulders, yes SHRUGGED, and proceeded to do the same thing again to two more questions I asked.
I have been worrying because more people seem to go through a Bad patch at the start of their quits when they have a really sore throat and cough up a lot of crud etc. This is a known and expected part of a lot of quits, but i have never went through it. I
I do have top clear my throat every morning but i have never had the "lungs clearing" stage.
Its good to know i am not on my own.
Just so you dont think you are going mad, I too have never had the "cleansing experience". Have not even suffered a cold, cough or anything.
Perhaps we are just finely tuned athletes..............
