Can transplant patients have the new Covid vaccines when available?
The new Covid vaccine : Can transplant... - Kidney Transplant
The new Covid vaccine
Only your transplant centre can answer this question, I know transplant patients can get a flu jab, I had a transplant a month ago and have been told to get a flu jab, live vaccines are not allowed for transplant patients, the team responsible for your care are the people to ask, but I am going into clinic this Friday so I can ask them there and I’ll tell you what they say.
I don't know. Personally, I am going to wait and see what happens when the government starts giving out the vaccine. If people start to drop dead or end up in worse shape then they were in before, I won't get one. I was under the impression that it was a live vaccine. I need more information from a reliable source and am not going to depend on my nephrology group for this kind information.
It is not a live vaccine. So no worries there. It mRNA technology. Really cool! I got my vaccine yesterday. I am an RN working in a hospital. 8 months post transplant.
I will get it when it is available here.
As in all things medical, I will defer to the expertise of my transplant nephrologist. When he recommends that I get a Covid vaccine and which one, then I will get vaccinated. I trust him completely. With kidney transplant joy and thankfulness, Margo
So far CDC or UNOS has not taken a position on Covid 19 vaccine for KT recipients ... but I came across this in New England Journal of Medicine .. Covid 19 & KT recipients ..does not talk about Vaccine.....but it presents a case study that provides a fair insight into what are the critical elements being monitored pertaining to immune system.& statistical outcomes for KTR -without vaccines.... We transplant recipients have to be EXTRA careful...

Thank you for this it is informative. I hope that just as we are able to receive an influenza vaccine, a dead vaccine, we will also be able to receive a Covid dead vaccine. Keep well all.
I just was reading this article, well it seems that both Pfizer& Moderna vaccines are not made out of Coronavirus, instead focus is on a certain spike protein of the virus whose genetic code is replicated in the vaccine, btw: it seems a lot has to be done in terms of testing - they had a cancer survivor, but no talk of solid organ transplant volunteers... It will get resolved in time. but in mean time we have to be EXTRA careful with mask, environment etc..as talked by Dr Fauci.
Ask your transplant center team. I am 21+ years post transplant and my nephrologist wants me to be first in line for the COVID vaccine. There are many vaccines drug companies are working on and said he will let me know which he feels I should get. I don't know about you, but I get my flu shot every year. I firmly believe that you are by far worse off if you come down with COVID or a really bad case of the flu. Being immunosuppressed we are a lot more likely to come down with either and wind up in kidney failure.
I have no doubts that the vaccine will be safe. They won't be distributing something that could harm you. Think about it for a minute...
Hi WYOAnne,Thanks for the clear thoughts here. I also have spoken with the transplant team at UC Health in Colorado and was told that we should be very early on the list for vaccination and that it is safe for transplant patients on immunospressives. The suggestion that these vaccines are somehow untested and people are going to "drop dead" from taking them is reckless and unnecessarily suggests that the highest risk population should wait and see before getting protection . The reason they have taken so long to become available is because of how many people they have been tested on so far to prove that they are safe.
ASK your transplant team. I was always told not to take or be around someone that took a live vaccine. I do get a flu shot every year
My understanding is that there are no kidney tx recipients in the vaccine clinical trials so we won't know how it will work for us.
btw my earlier message that had a LA Times reference is essentially a placebo, the actual vaccine has live virus and have noted that some vaccine recipients will get become infectious and shed the virus ( very small %) . In addition Dr Fauci & now the CDC have recommended to wear the mask after taking the vaccine.
My freddi 16 has the dead fue and virus vaccines injected not live nasal vaccine but I hope he can have Covid jab as it’s been an awful year for him and me mentally worrying who we come in contact with !
