Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I receive my transplanted kidney 30 year ago and still doing good.
I like to know if anyone with transplanted kidney has receive Covid vaccine, and how the vaccine affect the transplanted kidney.
Is there any thing that I need to look out for after getting the vaccine, such as kidney GFR, protein in the kidney, etc.

Vaccines for COVID shouldn't have any adverse effect on your transplant. It is the actual COVID infection that can damage your organs including the transplant.
I got both my vaccines in December. I've had no changes in my labs. Really the only concern is that we won't have a strong immune response because we are immunosuppressed
Recently saw a study that had 436 people test for antibodies after the 1st dose and only about 74 people had developed antibodies to covid. They are going to do the study following the 2nd dose soon. Only 17% developed antibodies.. hopefully, 2nd dose does better!
Who was the donor and wat medications are you on? What is the secret for such a long graft survival?
I don't know who was the donor (probably a decease person). The meds I'm on are Prednison, Cycosporin, Imuran, etc. I just do what the doctor told me to do and taken good care of myself in order to keep the kidney healthy.
HI, got the Johnson and Johnson March 5th - One and done. Felt nothing - not even a raised bump were I got the needle, the flu shot was worst the Covid-19 vaccine.
Sorry forgot to add had regular labs two weeks later and no differences from labs before vaccine which was actually on the 8th of March (not 3/5). I know 2 weeks not a long time but enough to feel comfortable. Mask up, 6Ft and wash hands - be safe.
I had my transplant over 21 years ago. I have had both of my shots of the Moderna vaccine. My 2nd shot was on February 10th. My nephrologist ran my labs twice 2 weeks apart to make sure I remained stable. There was no difference from my normal values.
My doctor also ran the antibody test a month after I received my 2nd shot. It was positive, so have built up antibodies against COVID.
LisaSnow is right! It would be far worse to catch the COVID virus. My nephrologist said that COVID makes your immune system go a little "crazy" - causing inflammation. The inflammation is the real problem and can be in your transplant or your lungs. I have seen stories on TV where some have had a serious case and have needed a lung transplant.
If you have concerns about the vaccine you should talk with your nephrologist. I am very relieved that I have been vaccinated!!!
Wow thats awesome that you developed antibodies. Seeing a recent study of only 17% developing antibodies after the 1st shot was a little discouraging!
I'm transplanted five years now. I got my first dose of Pfizer; the second one next week. Other than a slightly sore arm for a day, I felt fine. I hear the second may leave me feeling worse as it does for many people, CKD or not. All the guidelines I've heard on webinars say that it is far worse to get COVID, and the vaccine is safe for kidney patients (dialysis and transplant). I got both vaccine shots - Pfizer. I am 10months after transplant. No adverse effect so far on gFR
Congratulations! I've had my kidney 11 years this July and have been doing well. You are an inspiration! I am so happy to read your post because I have been afraid to get the vaccine because I don't know any other transplanted people who have had the vaccine so I really appreciate you letting us know how it has gone for you. I hope it will be offered to you soon. In CA most transplant patients have been offered and received the shots. It is really very important.

Hi Jfactor, I got my transplant in 2012 and all my reports have been good. I was vaccinated with Pfizer, both in March and had no reaction both times. In April, I saw my Nephrologist and he assured me that I'm doing well. Actually, he informed me that my kidney function has gone up. I'm 71 and my functioning level was consistently 50%, and now it's 60. I don't know if the vaccine had anything to do with it, but I'm glad I followed his advice and got vaccinated. I see him again in June and will find out if I have anti bodies. Stay informed and stay well!
