Covid vaccine

Hi, has anyone had their GFR drop after having the covid vaccine? I had the vaccine on a Saturday and the following Tuesday had my monthly lab done. Nervous to have second shot.

Hi, Mine has gone down too. It might not be related but it would be interesting to see if this is a trend. Speaking to my consultant for my regular chat this week so will ask and get back to you if I have news to share.

Best wishes,

Hello again, spoke with my consultant this week and asked him, he said there is nothing in the covid jab that has any effect on how the tablets I take, as a transplant recipient, work. (Prednisone, mycophenolate, tacrolimus) He said the vaccine does no harm. The only question is if we can produce antibodies. I was speaking with a group of transplant patients recently and some had had antibody tests which came back negative after their first vaccine. Think I might wait until 3 weeks after my 2nd jab then opt for an antibody test. Just to check....

Has anyone else been tested for antibodies?

Pfizer

I had the 1st Pfizer a few weeks ago. My creatinine and GFR improved noticeably after, creatinine went from 3.0 to 2.36 which correlated with a GFR improvement from 15 to 20. I get the second Pfizer vaccine this Thursday.

How long have you had your kidney and was it from a living donor

No. My creatinine and gfr got better. I don't think it had anything to do with the vaccine. That's what happened. Did it go back to normal?

My transplant center said NOT to get the vaccine. If it inter fears with your immune system, it might affect your kidney. Not enough research for transplant patients.

What country do you live in? That is definitely not the recommendation given by national kidney foundation or UNOS.

I would get the first available vaccine if I were you.

Here is a fact sheet from the National Kidney Foundation. They, along withAmerican Society of Nephrology and American Society of Transplantation all recommend that people with kidney disease or kidney transplant be vaccinated for COVID-19. kidney.org/sites/default/fi...

I am now fully vaccinated and have many doctor friends who all say it is safe. And while not a lot of tests are done on transplant patients on the efficacy of the vaccine on transplant patients, it is safe. And definitely a far better option than risking the severe complications from COVID-19 for this population.

Where are you located? My team said to get it as soon as I could. COVID can be really bad on your kidney. The only problem with the vaccine is that it might not work as well since our immune system is suppressed, it could suppress the response from the vaccine. I had no change in my labs after either dose.

I received my transplant at one of the large academic hospitals in Philadelphia. They are rapidly vaccinating all of their transplant patients- not just kidney. You might consider looking into it further.

My son's creatinine and GFR remained stable, but he had very low proteinuria prior to the vaccine (transplant patient), and two weeks after his first vaccination his protein spiked to 3+. Maybe coincidental maybe not. He is doing another 24 hour UA next week.

May I know your son's creatinine prior to vaccination? Did he have any issues with kidney prior to vaccination? 3+ protein can occur from old kidney, stress, infection, medicines and chronic antibody mediated rejection.

Good morning. Yes, his baseline is 1.9 to 2.3 but 2.0 is what it was prior to and after the first vaccination. He was experiencing low proteinuria, but Dr said not unusual for someone with one kidney that is actually a bit too small for him. We asked about the native kidneys and medication, but the dr said he didn't think so. They just did a biopsy (which is difficult for him as on Warfarin for mechanical aortic valve) and it showed very early recurrent disease with no damage to the kidney. No rejection. However, prior to IV Solumedrol treatment, his protein dropped back down to low proteinuria. Maybe vaccine caused a relapse? Maybe not. But, he'd get the vaccine again in a minute. Just wondering if anyone else with a protein-spilling disease experienced the same thing.

What is the disease that caused his kidney failure?

1st biopsy: Immune-complex crescentic glomerulonephritis with membranous features. 2nd biopsy of graft: Immune-complex glomerulonephritis, IgA dominant.

I bet if the Vaccine does drop a few GFR's that it's only temporary
