Hi - I am new to the community but not to transplantation!
My 23 year daughter is almost 8 years out from her surgery and has developed horrible cystic acne after changing birth control as advised by her newest physician. Nothing seems to work - and I now worry that her beautiful face will scar ...
Her current nephrologist, who we love and trust completely, suggested she see a dermatologist that specializes or at least, treats transplant patients at this major city hospital/university. She also says that my daughter should be ok to take accutane - which is the only treatment my two sons have had any success with as far as acne treatment goes! It worked like a charm for both of them!
My question - has anyone on here taken accutane safely and/or had an awful time with dealing with cystic acne (what has worked for you having had a transplant and being on immunosuppressive drugs) ?
Thanks in advance!

You should be asking your nephrologist more questions regarding Accutane. If you are concerned about the interaction between her immunosuppressant drugs and Accutane you should be asking your transplant team. They are the ones with the experience with drug interactions especially with her transplant meds.
My daughter’s nephrologist was the one who said she could use accutane with the dermatologist at her hospital that is familiar with and treats transplant patients. I just was wondering if anyone on this forum has used it themselves. There’s not much literature out on the web about it, so I figured I would ask here.
It sounds like as far as the Nephrologist it’s OK. He just wants you to get it and follow-up with the dermatologist. My sister also had excellent results. She just had to watch her diet. Not a transplant patient though. Best of luck!
Same thing happened to me. This was very early on. I was put on minocin by a dermatologist. The Other Drug wasn't around yet but I'd be careful about it. If it's okay with your kidney doctor then I assume it's okay.
Thank you for replying! She is away at grad school until December. Once she is back home for good, she will see the dermatologist her nephrologist recommended.
