I personally wouldn't take multivitamins ( for a lot of the vitamins included in multivitamins a normal dose suitable for people with functioning kidneys could harm you). I have been prescribed RENAVIT which have been designed with doses especially tailored to renal failure patients.

For supplements, it's best to get advice from a qualified Nutritional Therapist (link below).

Otherwise you'd have to rely on any responses on this forum (sorry these are currently limited), the internet or untrained/unqualified professionals incl doctors.

Hi,

Personally, I do not take Multi-Vitamins, mainly because not all those contained are the right ones or are of the right dosage for my needs.

I prefer to take single vitamins - I choose the ones which are most suitable for me, my needs and my various conditions. Some of the ones I take are specifically to boost my immune system as I am immune compromised.

Research your needs very carefully and particularly the effects of each vitamin you take. Always read the advisory notes which come with each vitamin.

If in any doubt, consult your physician.

Best of luck.

My first Nephrologist, who took care of me for 25 years, did not believe in multivitamins. He only recommended fish oil capsules and Vit D3. He said stay away from acidic vitamins such as Vit C and A. He said kidneys dont like anything acidic, don't drink orange juice, etc. No chocolate, no nuts. Diet guidelines were low salt, low protein, low fat. I did well with that Dr until he retired. I miss that man!

I take a B vitamin and a D3 after reading some research and listening to folks on this page. Not sure we need multivitamins but ask a dietician to be sure, wishing you well x

Yes, a former surgeon told me to take multi vitamins for the rest of my life as I had my large bowel removed and the ileum was used to make the J-Pouch. However, CKD came along. I take B12 to help my immune system.
