Motrin

So I had oral surgery, and the dentist gave me prescription for Motrin 800 mg. I know usually NSAIDs are not good for us. My kidney dr never told me I could not take it, but now I’m nervous. I have stage 3, just wondering if what you’ve heard from your physician about taking Motrin after surgery for pain?

NSAIDS are harmful to kidneys. I'd stay away from them. Please ask your kidney doctor for an alternative, like Tylenol (which is processed by your liver and OK for kidneys). Good luck!

Thanks Quallie, I tried tylenol, but it didn’t seem very effective. Too bad we can’t take NsAIDs

Sometimes we have to make choices regarding our health issues. If you're in a lot of pain, try a Motrin. I've had oral surgery and usually the pain doesn't last that long. On the other hand, if you can tolerate it then just do that.

Thanks Jodaer, I’m trying to do what you suggest and just take the Tylenol and wait it out cause I’ll probably be good in 2 days or so. I’m going to ask my nephrologist next time I see him if Motrin is okay to take for a short time like this situation. Cause Tylenol sometimes isn’t enough but stronger meds have made me sick in the past.

If you can't tough it out, I'd get a few pills of tylenol + codeine or Vicodin (hydrocodone plus tylenol).

Thank you Marvin. I toughed it out yesterday with just the tylenol. Next time I know to ask for something else:)

in reply toSarah_402

The dentist should have been able to prescribe Tramadol if you had told him you had kidney disease and can't take NSAIDS.

if you are truly in pain, call nephrologist and ask about alternatives now.

Thank you Notlucy, I was kidda surprised they gave it to me, maybe they didn’t notice my medical history :/

Non-nephrologists rarely look for potential CKD interaction issues. It's why you have to be your own doctor much of the time.

Yes you have to look after your own self!! You understand:):)

Unfortunately, yes.

NSAIDS is terrible for the kidneys. I also agree that Tylenol does not work as good. But it does help some. NSAID short term, like two days probably won't harm too much but you have to weigh out your choice. NSAID contributed to the cause of my CKD but I was on prescribed 1800mg daily for almost 3 years.

Thank you Bassetmommer:) I seem to be doing better today, so I never took it.

I would try to tuff it out. A few days of pain might delay dialysis in the long g run.

True:) Thanks Roxanne!

I've never had even a bad nephrologist that would even advocate the writing of NSAIDs. Dentists fall under a different narcotic rule. Break out the Hydrocodone.

Motrin is the worse thing for us to treat pain. I've had 2 surgeries over time and the surgeons both gave me Oxycodone which has 325 mg tylenol and 5mg of the codine and it does just fine. I'm now up to stage 2 after being at stage 3 a for 8 years. I only take 1 325mg tylenol and make do.

Yes I just took Tylenol, but only cause I remembered Motrin could be a problem. If I hadn’t know I would have just took it, assuming it would be fine. We have to look out for ourselves:) Thank you!

I don't know who told you tylenol is a problem but that is incorrect. My Nephrologist warned me about that Motrin if used all the time it can kill your kidneys. My sister used to be a nurse and learned that it shouldn't be taken. Please find out what is the truth!!

Sorry I wrote that wrong thing. I meant I remembered Motrin could be a problem.

Thank you!!
