Post biopsy doctors visit

So yesterday me and my husband had our post biopsy visit. The doctor confirmed the diagnosis of IGA nephpropathy. He is going to start him on Losartan 50mg twice a day to lower his protein output. He will take a blood test again next month to see how he is doing on it. Has anyone had the same experience and taken the same meds. Anything i can do to help things progress better. Thank you.

Hi rere96,

Sounds like you and your husband had a positive visit with his nephrologist.

At this point, there is a diagnosis and he/ she is setting up a medical action plan to treat the IGA going forward.

My thoughts; make sure that the nephrologist sends your husband's PCP copies of labs, biopsy and visit notes, so they can consult and are on the same page.

I would also consider a virtual or in person appointment with your husband's PCP to touch bases and get some support.

As far as the Losartan, it is an Angiotensin II receptor blocker; one of two widely prescribed families of drugs in the US as a first line protein reducer. The other is Lisinopril, which is an ACE inhibitor.

They also serve as a protection for the kidneys as they remove pressure from them. Diabetics are given high BP drugs at a low dose for the same reasons.

The three month monitor at this point is perfectly normal.

If a dietary lifestyle change; to foods more kidney-friendly for IGA patients, this is the perfect time to discuss them.

If they have a renal dietician in your area, ask for a referral as that person will suggest food choices based on your husband's labs and disorder which are appetizing and nutritious. If not, The NKF's number at the bottom of the page can probably help you.

Remember that every patient is different with different needs. The main goal is to reduce inflammation, stop protein spilling and progression.

Again, check with your husband's doctor.

Ideas? You may want to take a look at some of the links that I prior posted to you regarding diet.

Low sodium ( 1200- 2000mg) per day. Low protein including no red meats, processed foods as canned soups, watch potassium; tomatoes and potatoes are high in these areas as well as watch phosphorous; dairy, breads. Cookies, cakes and sugary items can irritate the IGA inflammation.

Labs are key.

Eggs, egg whites, beans, hummus, skinless chicken and omega 3 fish are better choices along with lots of vegetables such as cauliflower, onion, peppers, zucchini and yellow squash. Grill, roast with a tad of olive oil and non sodium spices, or steam.

Adding in Cream of Wheat is great and high in room for breakfast, or light wheat toast.

Fruits such as berries with a bit of non- dairy topping is great along with apples, pineapple, cherries and grapes.

Drink plenty of water unless a doctor specifies and eliminate dark colas as well as NASID pain relievers such as Advil, Aleve and Motrin.

Just remember that this is all a process and will take time to put all of the pieces together.

Take care of yourself as well and stay positive!

If I can be of any support to you, please feel free to reach out or send me a private chat.

Best,

Bet

I have IgA Nephropathy. I strongly recommend you visit IgAN.org. There’s also a great Facebook group for patients that talks about treatments and clinical trials. The standard treatment is high does of an ace inhibitor or arb but there are other emerging treatments depending on his labs.
