I've been having recurring bouts of nausea lately and noticed that after I eat any protein (peanut butter, chicken, fish, etc) the nausea is worse. I have an eGFR of 22, creatinine of 2.35 as of my May 24th test and I spill a lot of protein in my urine with some blood too. I've cut back on most protein which is why this is so noticeable. Is it possible the protein is causing this or could it be something else?

Protein causing nausea?
HI Horsie,Probably not the protein but the fat. Peanut butter is a fat bomb and animal fat is also hard on the body. Try not consuming those things for a while and see if you feel better. I would let the doctor know asap if you are seeing blood in your urine. That is not something to ignore.
Thanks. I've been trying to eat a lot of calories since I keep losing weight. I've been having issues with my appetite and food doesn't sound appetizing most days. I go to the nephr tomorrow and have requested a referral to a renal dietician. I don't "see" the blood but it shows up in my urinalysis. I'll add that to my list of questions for the doc.
oh I understand. For now, the fats you are consuming are not the best. The renal dietician can certainly help. Try avocados, olive oils and plant fats to help with your diet. You can figure out if that is the cause of your nausea if you eliminate them. If it doesn't help, then they are not the culprits.
If it is the fats would that indicate a gall bladder issue? My last abdominal US didn't show any issues and so I had an colonoscopy which was clean. The last time I lost a lot of weight it was discovered I have Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) but I've been in remission for years and none of the other signs are apparent. I will have my TSH rechecked though just to be clear.
Could be gallbladder. Usually that causes sharp pain in the upper right hand quadrant of your body, but it might be the cause. I cannot tell you as I am not a doctor. Good you are seeing the doctor.
Just a heads up about avocados, be careful, they are high in potassium, I just gave them up entirely (because 1/4 avocado was not enough for me ).
I had my gallbladder removed 6 years ago. Yes there is a lot of pain, however I can still remember the nausea. It was awful. I could just about handle the pain but the nausea was awful. I have noticed that a lot of people with kidney issues, seem to have problems with their gallbladder too. Hope you find the solution soon.
How's your calcium/phosphate levels? If unbalanced could be secondary hyperthyroidism - symptoms are:
Weak or broken bones (osteoporosis)
Bone and joint pain
Kidney stones
Urinating (peeing) more often than normal
Belly pain
Feeling weak or tired easily
Feeling sick to your stomach or throwing up
Feeling less hungry than usual (loss of appetite)
You could check your PTH levels just in case. Just a thought.
Just had my PTH, calcium, phosphorus checked and they are within range..there's no pain just the nausea...and it seems it's after everything I eat on some days.
Not sure if you are on a daily aspirin but if so: I often (not always) had quite bad stomach pain after eating. I stopped the once a day 75mg aspirin I have been on for the last thirty years. That was two weeks ago (which I realise is not long) but have had no stomach pain since which is unusual for me.
Too much protein causes protein leak in urine, the nausea and vomiting is a cause of declining kidney function and other conditions. Unless you have PKD protein is fine with most people It may also be lack of water, electrolytes especially sodium, vitamins like B, zinc, you have anemia or food poisoning Talk to your Dr about it if everything is ok try eating some veggies before eating protein and drink enough water but not over.
What is your uric acid level. When mine was 20 plus I vomited a lot and had headaches.
Where would I find that? Blood or uring?
Doesn't look like I've ever had that but I don't have gout or kidney stones so I doubt they'd test it.
