Protein in urine

For about a year i've taking 1x10 mg/day Crestor(Rosuvastatin) to treat high cholesterol levels without any major side-effects.A few weeks ago after a routine urine test my protein levels in urine showed (++) so i decided to dig a little deeper and went ahead to do a 24h urine test. The test came back and to my surprise my protein levels are over 4000 mg/24h which is really high! From what i saw in the common side effects regarding the medication is that it can increase protein levels in urine, but can it go that high? I am an otherwise healthy 55 yo male rather skinny and with no history of renal disease prior to taking this medicine, in fact just before staring this treatment my urine tests showed no signs of protein at all! So i'm wondering, could this be just because of the statins or it's just a coincidence that my protein levels skyrocketed in that period of time?

HI Miso,

There is no way we would be able to answer that question. You really should speak to your doctor. What happens with one patient may not happen with another. What did your doctor tell you?

I did find this article.

When I found out I had kidney disease I talked to my Doctor about side effects of Crestor including bone pain and malaise. He changed me to a drug Livalo that does not cause albuminuria and now I use Co enzyme Q-10 for malaise. Just because this worked for me does not mean it will work for you, so ask your doctor.

Hi JimVanHorn thanks for your reply,

My doctor is adamant that Crestor is not the culprit although my blood work and creatinine levels are more than good he still persists that the drug solely couldn't have caused such severe albuminuria.I tried talking him into prescribing me another drug but he is very firm on his position, moreover now he is trying to convince me to have a kidney biopsy due to my elevated albumin levels...pfffffff i don't know maybe it's time to change doctor.

Maybe a Nephrologist could help you.

There are a number of diseases that cause high urine protein but beginning stages of kidney disease may not show up in labs right

I also found this article about statins and proteinuria.

3 days before I went into kidney failure my labs looked okay.

Talk to your doctor about these possibilities.

I know this is an old post but I wondered if you have any developments on the statin debate. I've been prescribed rosuvastatin but protein in urine is listed as a side effect so bit nervous of taking it as that has been an issue for me.
