Pain meds with sensitive Kidney levels

Hi everyone, I had 2 episodes of where my gfr dropped from 68 to below 60 on the average 57. Once when I started taking Glucosamine and another when my blood pressure medicine manufacturer changed. It appears I am sensitive to the inactive ingredients but since there are several we don’t know which ones.

After talking with my Doctor it appears that I am very sensitive to chemicals. It took 9 months but slowly my numbers went up to gfr 70. Last test 68. Because of this I changed my diet and I am very careful about what I eat and drink lots of water and I am leary of taking suppliments or new meds. I am 70 yrs old

Here is my question, I am having dental Surgery soon and my Dental Specialist wants me to take Amoxicillin for just 3 days and Ibuprofen for 3 days for pain. I spoke to both Doctors and they feel just 3 days should be ok. Is there something better to take for pain that is more gentle on the kidney’s? I am Leary of both but especially the Ibuprofen. The Antibiotics they said is a must with dental surgery.

Thank you everyone.

I can't speak to the amoxicillin but the ibuprofen is out for you. Even on a limited basis your best bet is tylenol. I've had dental work done in the previous year and the tylenol worked well for me. They did give me an antibiotic for three days, but my dentist contacted my nephrologist and discussed the procedure and they came up with a milder one for me. It's different for each person, so if you trust your nephrologist ask your dentist to contact them and get their advice.Best of luck

Thank you Mr Kidney. My GP doesn’t think I have kidney problems as all other levels have remained well within normal range. I was not referred to a Nephrologist. There was a drop in GFR 2x over 3 years, but within months the numbers slowly went back up. I did get a ultra sound and all was normal.

Since they are my kidneys I intend to be ultra careful. Both my Doctors feel a short period (3 days) on Antibiotics because of dental surgery is needed. I am not happy about it. But I differently do not want to take ibuprofen 800 mg. I will have Tylenol on hand if the pain gets bad.

Thank you for your time and advise.

I had an anesthesiologist prescribe an NSAID after surgery unrelated to my kidney disease. I was in recovery and a nurse brought a little paper cup with a tablet in it and told me to take it. I don't put anything in my body if I don't know what it is so I asked. When she identified it as an NSAID, I said "I'm not taking that." She said , "But the anesthesiologist prescribed it!" I went without pain relief that night. My nephrologist had a fit. Ever since, they just prescribe 5 oxycodone tablets after surgery. I've never had to use more than 2 so that's perfect for me.
