The multivitamin I've been taking forever has phosphorus in it, should I stop taking it? I know there are prescription renal vitamins, but I haven't seen a nephrologist yet. In the meantime, should I stop taking these multivitamins?

Yes, other multivitamins may be safer. However, until you meet with a nephrologist and go over your labs, past, and present, hold off with any changes until you speak to the nephrologist familiar with your numbers, your health, and your medical needs. Use your time to research, learn, and develop questions regarding a treatment plan, meal, and exercise plans specific to your needs.

Agree with Mr_Kidney, that is best to ask your Nephrologist or Primary Doctor about which vitamin is best for you. I am taking a senior multi vitamin that has only 20mg of phosphorus. I too had concerns about phosphorus as some multi vitamins have more.

Turtlewoman,

I agree with both Mr._ Kidney and Orange City about making any changes until you meet with your nephrologist.

You might want to bring the bottles, a brief list of what you eat and labs with you.

Like OC, I discovered that some vitamins have higher levels of nutrients and some hidden at the bottom.

I can't have soy products due to a thyroid issue. I have had to carefully read probiotic labels as some do contain soy lecithin.

I also take Sunflower Lecithin as it contains no soy.

I applaud you for your tenacity and devotion to making changes which are both kidney and diabetes friendly.

It is all going to be fine, I promise!

Reach back and let us know the outcome of your Nephrology appointment. We are here for you and waiting to hear.

My Nephrologist had forbidden me to take any vitamin without his vetting and approval, including renal vitamins. The only vitamin he allowed is omega 3 but from very specific brand. He prefers to incorporate what my body needs with diet (natural food - not.processed), activities, etc.

Every meds I put in my body has to be vetted vs its harmful effect on the kidney.

11 years ago, I was stage 4 (creatinine at 2.0 and eGFR at 22). Those precautions helped extend my kidneys' life until I had a living donor transplant last May. Did not pass thru dialysis. Everything was planned in the last +30 years.

Tale care, be well.
