Has anybody here tried D Mannose for Urinary Tract Infection?

Hi Everyone,

I have just finished a prescribed 5 day course of Trimethoprin (antibiotic) for UTI, but am still symptomatic.

There seems to be a lot of good information/recommendations for D Mannose (esp for E-coli). Even the NHS say this:-

"D-Mannose (200 ml of 1% solution once daily in the evening)

D-Mannose is thought to block E-coli bacteria from growing in the urinary system. It attaches to the E-coli bacteria and prevents it attaching to the cells in the urinary tract. The bacteria are removed on passing urine (voiding).

D-Mannose can cause loose stools and you should check with your specialist doctor or GP before taking D-Mannose. You should also seek advice before taking if you have diabetes as it is a form of sugar."

Although I wouldn't recommend anybody to consider it without reading the full text:-

gloshospitals.nhs.uk/media/....

Before raising the possibility with my GP, I thought I'd ask if anybody here has tried it, or was advised not to due to kidney health

Thank you

Yes my mum tried it then one or two other herbs for a quite severe UTI a year or more ago. Whilst the herbs didn't clear it, we believe they may have assisted the subsequent antibiotic as the UTI was then removed more quickly than normal

Than you, for the response userotc

My GP has now prescribed Nitrofurantoin (antibiotic), and I have a horrible feeling that they are going to make me feel worse than the UTI. 🤦‍♀️ But what can do, hey

Hi Nellie 237, I have not used D-mannose myself, but my sister who has ALS uses it whenever a UTI pops up. She has always had good results with it.

Thank you CK,

I think I'll get some to take for a while, after I've finished my current antibiotics.😊

I tried it and to be honest had little affect - specialist told me to double the dose if I had an infection but I still ended up on antibiotics over three months which does help but I have found it’ll take a couple of three monthly doses to keep me clear for maybe a year but then it comes back - I have good hygiene, drink loads of water and getting the UTIs, which have troubled me for last 7 years frustrating, especially when I’m told there’s no medical reason for them yet yet I get them I pass/test for blood and infection in the urine

Oh gosh, poor you........7 years. I've been reading about the urine testing (which apparently hasn't been updated since the 1950's), and lots and lots of people testing negative, when they are positive. There are some explanations about the bacteria hibernating in the bladder wall. Somebody directed me to this link to Chronic UTI Australia (charity) which is quite informative:-

That’s really interesting and I can see the cycle with my infections- I can go for weeks then a UTI (acute) will hit, antibiotics and it appears to go then comes back with evengeance - I also have colitis and GP blames a colitis flare on the uti but it doesn’t always correlate

My husband was getting several UTIs in a row, and the standard lab test always declared him "clear" after a course of antibiotics. But then it would come right back again. His urologist ran a much more specific DNA urine test ($$$), but it was more accurately able to pinpoint the right antibiotic and tell when he was actually clear of infection. Though expensive (our insurance covered most of it), it sure beat going on antibiotic after antibiotic! Best wishes!

I'm so glad your husband got the right treatment.😊

Yes, I've seen the DNA test mentioned, and it sounds really effective. Unfortunately I'm in the UK, and before thinking about spending lots of £££'s, I've really got to try the 2nd lot of antibiotics. Urrgh.

Read up on Hiprex and it might help. I am finding that after 11 lots of antibiotics this does seem to be working. I have bug resistant to a lot of antibiotics and am immune suppressed so fingers crossed.

I suspected I had an UTI because of frequent urination and I started on D-Mannose right away. I have been using it for years when I think I need it. It always works. I will not take an antibiotic because that screws up your system. My renal dietician said it was OK to take it. I highly recommend it.

"My renal dietician said it was OK to take it. " Ah that's really good to know, thank you Starcatty.😊

I'm only in stage 2, but I had a kidney injury last year, which dropped my eGFR to 29% , so I'm trying to take care of them. This is my 1st ever UTI too, but I've learned that we need to research what our doctors are telling us.

Yes, I have taken it on the advice of my urologist. I had a really bad infection due to kidney stones a couple of years ago and I was given five different antibiotics, one of which my gp had never heard of but nothing shifted it until i took d mannose. Now at the slightest sign of a UTI I take it and everything seems to settle down in two to three days. Even if I have episodes where I am peeing a lot during the night I take it for a couple of day. I just wished I had known about this sooner. No problems with my kidney function unlike diclofenac which dropped my kidney function to 30. And no antibiotics is really helping the gut issues I faced on antibiotics.

Thank you for responding Folklady. I'm glad to hear you managed to clear your infection......in the end. So, so many people having similar problems, and antibiotics. I think it sounds like a good idea to keep some in the cupboard.😊

What is D-Mannose...is it a ProBiotic ?

No, not a Pro-Biotic.

"The active ingredient of cranberry is D-mannose. D-mannose

may be given as a pure ingredient rather than in cranberry

products and can be purchased from health food stores."
