I haven’t had the catheter placement surgery yet. I’m sure others who have will chime in soon. Everyone who posts after they get the catheter placed cone back and say y that it was done; much better than they had expected.

I was scared, too, but mine was done under general anesthesia. It was a piece of cake. I woke up and it was done! I had very little pain and was back to work 3 days later. Later, I had some trouble with the catheter not draining, so they attempted to re-position it using local anesthesia..... wasn’t fun. I would request general anesthesia if possible.

Good luck. Don’t worry too much. Things are seldom as bad as we imagine.

I did peritoneal dialysis for 2.5 years and finally got the call offering me a deceased donor’s kidney in August, 2020. Covid was raging and it was a very scary time to be in the hospital, but everything ultimately worked out and me and “Kevin,” (my new kidney), are getting along well!

Hey Jenny2019, I totally understand where you are coming from because I have had two inserted in my life. One was when I was almost seven and then I had one inserted again when I was 37. I really don’t remember much from the first time. But the second time I do remember. My first one was done in the states and the second done in Canada. I would say really there is not too much to worry about. When they did mine the second time they were worried about excessive scare tissue and said that once they put me under local anaesthesia they would put a scope in and make sure they could do it before actually doing it. Honestly I was in slight discomfort after the surgery but after a few hours it went away. With me they did not even use it for about three months letting the incision fully heal, yet they did say that if they had to they could use it the day it was put in. I would suggest just talking to your nephrologist as much as possible and the surgeon who is doing the surgery. I am sure you will do fine cause I know the surgeon that I had was a specialist in peritoneal dialysis line insertions. That is all she did for a long time so I had very strong confidence in her. I am sure your nephrologist will get you with someone who knows everything about the surgery and does it VERY often. Best of luck to you and if you have anymore questions or want to talk more about what you are going through to ease your mind, please don’t hesitate to message me. Blessings.

I had my catheter put in under General Anesthisia...so I dont remember it being painful.. but be sure and follow your discharge instructions....dont lift over 10 pounds until stitches are healed.. dont let yourself become constipated... they gave me pain meds but really didnt need them after first day....keep your exit site clean...sleep all you can and take good care of you...You will feel so much better after you begin Dialysis...I feel like I got my life back

All good advice! The only thing I would add is that my husband (on PD) was was put under general anesthesia for his cath placement whereas you're receiving a local, which is probably wise. General anesthesia carries a greater risk for patients contracting POUR (postoperative urinary tract retention) for men and women, perhaps moreso for lower abdominal type surgeries. Should you experience pain of any sort, don't hesitate to alert the medical staff, no one should suffer through pain. In our opinion, you're setting off on a good path for a successful outcome!

Hi Jenny, I had the catheter procedure laparoscopicly and my stomach muscles hurt for about 3 days. But no worse than doing 25 sit-ups. I went through a crash course of 4 days to learn all the steps. I'm so glad that I was able to do peritoneal dialysis as it did not get in the way of life. I did this for 1 month and was so fortunate to get a donor kidney. This all happened 9 years ago this September. Everything will be all right, you will be fine. Just make sure you pay close attention to your training. That's very important. Good Luck!
