After being diagnosed with lupus in 2013, I thought that I had gone through the worst. Then in 2014, I experienced my first kidney failure, which was a horrible experience.

The first sign of my kidney failure was a UTI. I was sent home from the emergency room multiple times over a month's time and they kept diagnosing me with kidney failure. During one of those emergency room visits, they gave me antibiotics that made my throat swell and I felt like I could not breathe. I ended up going back to the hospital where they had to give me something to counteract the reaction I had received from the antibiotics.

HI Christie, you have been through a lot. Just want to ask you something.... you keep saying kidney FAILURE.... if you have kidney failure, you should be on dialysis. If you have chronic kidney disease, there are things you can do to help yourself. Do you know what stage CKD you have?

Stage 5 (GFR < 15 ml/min): Kidney failure (also called end-stage renal disease, ESRD). Dialysis or a kidney transplant is needed to survive, I am going through the worse moment of my life right now, I welcome death to come take me away!!! AM TIRED!!!

Hi Christie. I am so sorry for your experience. Please try not to lose hope. Three years ago I was diagnosed with a GFR of 12. Through some diet changes and exercise I was able to improve my GFR to 18. While everyone’s journey is different depending on what caused the CKD you might be able to improve your kidney function. I would say to ask your Dr to see if there was anything you can do to improve your kidney function. .

I would say to review your labs with your doctor and ask what changes can be made to improve your numbers.

Christie, at a GFR of 15, there is hope. I was told I would be on dialysis in 6 months and was able with diet and healthy lifestyle to go for six years. I did not start dialysis until I was GFR 7. I also have an autoimmune disease. Hang in there. They can help you with your Lupus to get that under control and you can work on getting you numbers up.

A UTI is not kidney failure. What is your Gfr? There are 5 stages to CKD. Has a Dr diagnosed you with it? If so, there are things you can do to help yourself. Don’t panic.
