presently I am at stage 2 creatinine 1.32 - 1.2 and eGFR 56 - 63. My sleep is terrible - no more than 4 - 4.5 hours , also difficulty sometimes falling asleep. Besides " behavioral" interventions are there medications of herbal stuff that is kidney friendly . I did a 6 year stint of paper delivery in the early mornings - getting up at 2.15 in the morning . I stopped 3 years ago but have not delt with the problem .I have to rewire my body and brain - thanks

I use melatonin, but your first step is to ask your doctors. You shouldn't take any supplements without your PCP and nephrologists' approval. Before they prescribe any medications you may be advised to have a sleep study conducted.

Hi Allan,

Resetting sleep patterns is really difficult. I have issues in the am because I used to get up every morning before 5am. Now, being retired, I stay up later but I still wake up at 5ish. There is a lot on the Internet about resetting your sleep. I personally used melatonin for a while. Truth told, it knocked me out. And then, in the morning, I often felt hung over and cranky. So I stopped using that. Now I am taking CBD oil at night. I am still not sure how much it helps. I find that when I get up for a bathroom run around 3, I fall back asleep, most nights. Sometimes, I perseverate and have trouble falling back asleep. With the CBD oil, I also fall asleep very quickly when I first go to bed. My use of CBD oil was blessed by all of my healthcare team. The biggest draw back was the dry mouth, but now, I take it earlier and have ice water after. What ever you do, check with your health care providers to make sure it is ok for you.

adrenalfatigue.org/sleep-di... - Look up the adrenal cocktail... super simple combination of orange juice and a good quality salt at bed. Some people find it helps if you keep at your bedside and drink an ounce or two if you wake up in the middle of the night. It helps to calm adrenaline which is often the cause of waking up a few hours after falling asleep and not being able to go back to sleep. - I tried a bit of water and himalayan salt after I had woken up , it did relax me and made it easier to sleep. My sodium is low , but I don't want to make this a habit

No way would I use salt or orange juice. That is the worst recommendation for anyone with CKD. Why did you ask about sleep if you already had a remedy?

I was wondering if anyone suffered from Adrenal fatigue. When I eventualy get to a sleep clinic , I will ask about this , also ask doctors. For sure this remedy is far from a first choice. I saw lavendar balm helps

I would say no on salt and orange juice as well. I have insomnia not because of CKD but from being floxed from Cipro and for me it’s been a struggle for 4 years. I usually read a book and I start to feel tired early and I try and sleep. It works 60% of the time. When it doesn’t work I am up till 4-6am. But since seeing my nephrologist last month and switching to a kidney friendly diet I have been able to sleep much easier. I had a 3 month stint of kidney issues. My GFR was 56 and 60 in December and now it’s 85, 82, and 92. I am 45 years old. Creatinine is 1.12. But going to stick to a kidney friendly diet and continue my probiotic. This is the best I have felt these last 3 weeks VS the past 4 years.

Not sure if you lack of sleep has anything to do with CKD, talk to your Dr about this. What has helped me sleep well is exercize daily and I set my alarm to wake up and go to sleep, it takes a while to reset you sleeping cycle but it has worked for me. My Nephrologist said 8 hours sleep is very important for kidney disease.

As Mr_Kidney, I also use melatonin. For me, it has been blessed by my nephrologist. When you have CKD you need to ask your doctor about everything you put into your body, even over the counter supplements

The OJ and salt is the worst thing you can take as someone with CKD, not only the salt but taking into consideration the potassium in the OJ.
