I have a question. I just got a call from my family dr and she said dr would like to see me from following up appointment, what does that mean? I just had my kidney biopsy done on July 16 and he wanted to see me July 22. Is this something to be worry about?? Please help. And I’m still feeling sore and pain.

Stop the panic. It's premature at this point. The doctor is going to give you the results of the biopsy. If it was clean he could have his nurse let you know. It's not, so he wants to speak to you in person. That is not a reason to panic. Sitting with you face to face to explain the results, answer your questions and give you some sound medical advice is the responsible way to handle this. Listen carefully, or bring someone with you to take notes or ask your doctor if you can record it so you don't forget something important.

After you get home and you decide you have some questions come back here and someone will be able to help you get through the process.

I never had dr called me after biopsy, like this. Maybe they found something serious and need to talk to me in person, but why they say following up appointment?

I thought it was supposed to be my kids specialist that called but it was my family dr. It say following up appointment

I agree completely with Mr Kidney. Worrying won’t help anything and, at this point, it’s premature. I’ve had a biopsy. The results need to be explained thoroughly which, from my perspective, really can’t be done over the phone. In my case my biopsy results didn’t show anything my nephrologist and I weren’t expecting but he still set a follow-up appt to review the results with me in detail. That also gave me ample opportunity to ask questions.

It sounds like your doctor is doing what I would want my doctor to do.

It has been 2 days and I still feel sore. Is that normal? Always feel like frequent need bathroom.

I really don’t remember feeling much pain with the biopsy at all; but I’m kind of a trooper with medical stuff🐶

Yes, i would say i was sore for a good 4 or 5 days. Not really in a lot of pain, just a lot of tenderness

Hi ehh,

Most doctors will and should not discuss results with patients over the phone or give it to the nurse. So the fact your doctor wants to see you is responsible and professional. You're lucky. The results could be nothing, or it could be something. The good news is that you are had the test and now you can deal with the results. We are here for you. BTW, kidney disease is treatable in most cases. So hang in there.

BTW, try making sure you are drinking plenty of water. It will support the kidney as they heal from the biopsy. Do not take OTC pain meds like ibuprofen. They are very bad for the kidney. Let us know what your results are.

i didn't take any painkiller. i took only Tylenol.i hope and pray that nothing is very serious.

I can understand your feelings as a summons to the doctor can cause anxious feelings. Sit tight. I wholeheartedly agree with Mr._Kidney, Bassetmommer and WyoAnne about panicing and am happy to hear

that your doctor is taking the time to go over the biopsy results with you at an appointment rather than just on the phone. The results will be more thoroughly explained and not necessarily awful. A plan to go forward should also come up .

I agree with Mr._Kidney that if you are able to bring someone to take notes for you is clearly to your benefit as you have visuals and a recording device if not a person as you will be able to review after the appointment. If you have questions, make a point of asking. If you are still feeling discomfort, tell your doctor.

Keep positive thoughts as this is all a process and this is one more step.

Get back to us!

Biopsies help the nephrologist find out the cause of your kidney issues. The doctor does not usually give results like this over the phone whether the results show anything or not. Like Mr_Kidney said, this is not a reason to panic and worry. Be glad that you have a doctor that wants to meet you face and face and discuss the results. You don't even know the results yet.....so don't jump to conclusions. Write down questions you might have and prepare for the appt. rather than worrying.

My Doctor called and gave me results on the phone... while I was at work....it wasn't good and it really sucked to get news like that over the phone....didn't have an appointment for 2 months later and I fretted myself to death...mainly because I couldn't ask any questions...he sounds like a responsible and caring doctor

ehh22 profile image
ehh22 in reply toRhenDutchess123

I hope it isn’t serious. But I know that blood in urine can be serious and maybe could. Lead to failure, my Nephrologist doesn’t wanna put me on too much medication because I’m still young, and plus he’s not sure whether I still need to be out in med. that’s why he wanna know the cause of the bleed , it could be from previous inflammation or my lupus is still active . He said he doesn’t wanna what untill too late . Better to get tested it . So I did and now I don’t kkow the result . My Nephrologist doesn’t called me but scheduled me August 6 for appointment. But family Dr called yesterday for following up appointment. What’s following up appointment?

That sounds terrible! I’m glad my nephrologist didn’t handle my biopsy results that way.

Wondering is kidney still inflamed or lupus still active in kidney.

I have a friend who I believe has what you’ve got with lupus. Her kidneys are hanging in there at this point. Hopefully you’ll have similar results!

Yeh, I still feel sore and i didn’t take any painkiller and i feel like anxiety make it worsen for me . I have interned muscles when I lee and couldn’t. 😪it’s soo frustrating to me. Don’t know why this lupus gives me so many problems. Life is full of disease. I don’t what i did wrong to deserve this.

Bet117 profile image

I have idiopathic Membraneous Nephropathy; non Lupus. An autoimmune glomerlur disorder.

I take 2.5 mg of Lisinopril, eat a kidney-friendly diet, which leans heavily on vegetables, drink my water and walk several days per week.

My nephrologist has me do a spot and 24 urine catch to more carefully monitor my protein spilling every 3 months as well as routine blood work. I follow my labs - if I hear stable, I am grateful.

Nothing is written in stone as things change; but there is a lot to be said about watching your diet and working with your health care team.

I can understand how you feel, but sit tight and see what the results yield and your plan will be.

Positive thinking!

And given how rare it is it’s even more surprising to me that you were given this information over the phone. Honestly, I can’t help but wonder what medical people are thinking some times!

Many of them do. There are "doctors" and then there are "doctors". They are paid well for their services but not all reach out to their patients the way they desrve to be treated.

Sad..

My gfr at biopsy was 38....after 3 1/2 years I have regressed to 16 gfr...the strange thing is all my electrolytes are a in normal range....I am not yet on dialysis and I feel rather good...It may sound odd...but I was glad it was over the phone...except I was at work....I didn't have to hide my tears on the phone .

Jayhawker in reply toRhenDutchess123

Well, I’m certainly glad to hear that you’re still feeling pretty good! Hopefully that will be the case for some time yet to come.

I can understand what you mean about preferring to get the information over the phone. I’ve preferred to get my lab results through my patient portal in advance of my appointments. That gives me the chance to “adjust” to what they say, particularly if it’s more bad news. Plus, it gives me time to pull together questions related to the data before I get to the appointment. That certainly leads to better use of the appointment time.

And your “case” underscores how little nephrologists actually know about renal failure. My first nephrologist, who was quite good, used to say that with regularity.

So we each do our best to manage CKD. We work with our medical team. Ultimately a lot seems to hinge on our approach to the condition; on our attitudes and our resiliency.

I’ve found your attitude to be most helpful. You’re so right; there are several innovations under development that will be major game changers for those of us in renal failure. And some seem to be within a few years of FDA approval. Consequently, there is reason for hope. And, there are treatments available now that promote continued life while still feeling and functioning quite well; we just have to wrap our brains around dialysis and embrace it as the life saving treatment it is.

Bet117 profile image
Bet117NKF Ambassador in reply toehh22

Absolutely, but those feelings are positively normal; especially when there are a lot of unknowns.

The key is to continue to tell yourself that it is "out of your control and that what ever be you will deal with it."

Take a walk, deep breaths and try to submerge yourself in something that relaxes you. I love to read, watch baseball,

movies and have been hooked on the same soap since I am 15 and now watch it on my phone app if I am out. It has helped; life happens around you and not every day is perfect.

Just know that you are not alone! Reach out! 😊

For me it’s listening to music, walking my dog, doing a workout on my elliptical machine, visiting with friends, and when In season, watching college basketball or professional football. I also try to treat myself by going to symphony concerts, etc, a few times a month. All these things help me manage stress and anxiety. Plus, I know that God has got this; He’s watching over me🐶

Bit late to reply, was in hospital for hernia surgery. It's 4 days and it pains all over. Just be calm , do deep slow breathing if Dr is coming it's professional call . Don't let anxiety enter . You have so many friends here.

i feel that health care providers that give no information and leave you hanging that way are extremely insensitive bordering on cruel.you are certainly not alone . try your best to relax. you may want to call drs office back and let them know that this is making you very anxious and could they please give you some basic information. i know its easy to say but in the meantime try to re direct your thoughts. things will work out once fully explained and out in the open. take care.

I went to see dr yesterday, and he told me there’s no result yet and it’s too early. I complained to him about my pain and sores. All he does was telling me to take Tylenol 500mg. This Tylenol doesn’t help me much. I always feel the urges to pee but when I do, little amounts comes out, and press some pressures . I sometimes do have a rapid heart beat without any reasons and makes it hard for me to urinated than omg. This is heard 😢😢😢😢
