Could this be a blip?

Good morning! I'm still at the GP stage, my last GFR was 58 having dropped from 98 about a year previous. I had a second blood test today to check again. Is it likely this could just be a blip and I get normal readings this time?

Anythjng is possible. If you do get an "in range" reading the question you should then ask is, '" What caused it to drop?"

There could be a variety if reasons so be sure to ask your doctor and provide the physician with details about the 48-72 hours prior to the labs being taken. Were you sick, did you overdue exercise, were you dehydrated? Those are just a few possibilities, so share what you know at your next appointment.

Hi Candy,

If my GFR dropped 40 points from the previous year, I would have asked the doctor then what was going on...... that's a big drop.

As Mr. Kidney said, let's see what the new labs say. I hope it comes back up for you.

My husband's GFR dropped and was told he had stage 3 kidney disease. I did so studying to see what might cause it to drop. I found out that taking pain medicines [advil, which he was taking regulary] and nexium for acid indigestion [which he was taking] can affect the kidneys. He went off both and the next time he had blood work done [about a year later] his GFR had risen back up to normal range. Age is a factor also. It's amazing the things that can affect the kidneys. If you're taking any meds go online if you can and see if it might be a problem for your kidneys. Good luck to you.

That is great news, I am so happy you were able to turn it around. Iove reading these posts. Congrats

Force your doctor to ask for a Cystatin - C test. It's cheap and is very useful in corroborating or ruling out kidney disease. Newer doctors use it instead of creatinine as a predictor. Old docs tend to use creatinine alone. Those who aren't ready to make the leap yet use the combination formula that takes both creatinine and Cystatin - C into account.
