cystoscopy this week

I am going for a cystoscopy this week and I’m told it’s a unmedicated procedure not much more has been told to me. I’m very nervous 😬 I’ve already had one CAT scan before this and now that I’m seeing a specialist he wants to send me for another CAT scan within a week of my kidneys. I have pain on one side.

All of this started with blood in my urine and then some gross hematuria in August. It’s taken a long time to get to this point. He says he’s looking for tumours and of course I’m scared it’s cancer. I was dealing with my chronic kidney disease as best I could, and to be honest, I thought that this happening was a symptom of that….. Has anyone else on here had a cystoscopy in hospital out patients with no medication and if you did was it very painful or uncomfortable?

I know everyone will they ask you Dr. well I can’t get a hold of my doctor and I probably won’t ask him this now until Wednesday when I go for the procedure. I live alone and I have to come home up three floors in my apartment building. Will I be OK to stay alone? I did this after having my gallbladder out last year it was inconvenient but I was out and about walking and driving in a few days for that. There really isn’t anyone to ask to help as my kids are grown with families of their own and too busy.

I’ve not had a cytoscopy but my dad had quite a few because he had bladder cancer. He found them to be not too uncomfortable (he used to joke it only hurt when they wound the camera on! ) and he was perfectly fine on his own - he drove himself there and came straight back afterwards no problems .

thank you so much. It’s good to hear from someone that at least was close to it and to know that I can drive myself both ways and that it wasn’t too painful I was maybe worried too much! Thank you.

Hi. I have had this procedure several times. My Urologist used a numbing agent which helped with the insertion of the scope. The test didn’t take long and I was able to return home with little pain.

Around 15 or so years ago, I had a urologist perform a procedure in his office where he took a peek inside my urethra. I do remember that it was some pinching or stinging, but just for a few seconds. It’s not a clear, concise memory, so it must not have been that bad. The whole exam took just a very few minutes. I wish you the best!

I naturally am nervous about what they find as he’s looking for tumours to explain blood that I have in my urine.

What causes the blood that you have after having the procedure done is it damage? Im having this because of the hematuria. I do live alone in a 3 floor walk up and haven’t been told anything about afterwards but I’m assuming it’s ok.

The only trace of blood that I had was from the procedure itself. I did not have the issue that you are describing, and I wish I could give you more information on that. I did not have any problems after the procedure, except for minor discomfort that did not last very long. I did try to relax as much as I could, because it helped me during the scoping process. 🙂

How much blood does the procedure itself cause usually I will be alone afterwards and just want to have a good idea what to expect. Thank you!

Just a spot or two. It probably came from the instrument the Dr. used. I was not concerned at all.

My answer is a carbon copy of Fraggle 18! My dad was playing squash within days of flexible cystoscopies and a bit longer after a rigid one!

70F here. Had my first cystoscopy in October. Procedure was in Doctors office using a numbing agent. Walked out on my own in fine condition. The procedure pumps a lot of water into your bladder, so you’ll need to hit the restroom right after. Sensation a little weird, but no pain at all. Good luck.

Should you have to deal with cancer as I am, let your kids step up when they can. Your description sounded like a carbon copy of mine. But as things have gone along, both have been here for me as much as they can and I am very thankful. I understand you don't want to abuse the privilege but I have loved spending extra time visiting with them.

I have learned from the past that they are too busy I’m usually the one who helps them so if he does find cancer I’m going to have to rely on myself probably occasionally visits from grandchildren

In this modern world it can often be the case, but hopefully they will help if you ask, wishing you well xx

My husband has a cystoscopy every 6 mos. He was diagnosed with cancer in his ureter 10 years ago. He lost a kidney to the cancer and he still has cancer. When the Dr looks into the bladder, he can see tiny tumors and they can be removed before they spread. The cystoscopy is a little uncomfortable for him, but not painful.Prayers for a good report.

Not sure how they do it for females, but for males, they squirt numbing gel into the pee hole. It is a strange feeling, but it wasn't anything extreme. I felt burning sensations and was required to urinate before they let me leave. That was not easy for me to do. I was way more uneasy with the doctor handling my manhood. I watched the camera on a big screen. I was urinating A LOTTTT of dark red blood for a month and I had rapid weight loss, severe kidney pains. My blood was due to several large kidney stones blocking the flow. I have moderate hydronephrosis in 1 kidney due to the blockage. Cancer was highly suspected.

Thank you for information have they got a treatment plan sorted. I think the procedure is the same …. Into the pee hole wherever it is

I was prescribed Flomax to help with my kidney stones. Nothing else was offered. I also have other autoimmune diseases that attack the kidneys. I am currently on a major diet to help. Low oxalates, no gluten, no sugar, no dairy, low FODMAP. I'm trying to avoid the treatments offered such as immunosuppressants for my autoimmune diseases. I do take Prednisone sparingly since it also causes issues. I drink water only and take diuretics to help the flow.

I am a diabetic and do worry about kidneys. I’ve known for years I have kidney disease but the doctor said that doesn’t cause blood in urine. I’ve been complaining about pain in rt side for months plus blood in urine I’m just undergoing the tests and scans now so it’s been hanging over my head way too long I just need to know!

hi Chilly

I have had many cystoscopes in the dr’s office and never had anesthesia. The dr sprayed the outer area with a numbing spray. He positioned the camera with a small tube very quickly. The only pain I had was some cramping during the 3-5 minute procedure. I drove to and from by myself and was fine. No bleeding for me. The hardest part is to relax also the most important part. Once he removed the tube the cramping stopped. I’ll be praying for a good outcome for you!

I had a cystoscopy and they put numbing gel all on the outside. They let it numb up for about 10 minutes and I felt nothing at all. Best wishes! Huggs XOXO
