9 yr old post Acute Renal Failure ... trouble swallowing food

Hey there ... my Niece had an Acute Renal Failure about 7 years ago which she recovered quite well from . Of late she has been losing weight as she has not been eating well . But she is chirpy and active ( at times hyper when playing ) . She is underweight but within her growth percentile.

Just last week she had trouble swallowing .She’ll chew some food and then spit out ( not vomit / or cough up ) remnants ( about a 1/4 of what was chewed) . Took her to the ER twice and the doctor checked her throat out and even did an x-ray of her throat . She said it was fine .

She has a yearly appointment with her doc where a renal blood test is taken .everything has been normal up till now with this “spitting out food episode”.

My sister has scheduled an earlier appointment with the ENT specialist to have her checked out completely to see what’s going on .

Any feedback / help at this stage from all of you would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance .

Is it possible that she could have an acid reflux problem? I have episodes where I can't swallow food and will end up spitting it up or forcing myself to puke since it felt like food was getting stuck in my throat. A lot of times the esophagus will look fine and won't even have acid damage, but the reflux can still be there and cause throat irritation and sphincter spasms at the stomach, which will make it nearly impossible to swallow properly.

In the mean time, having her drink smoothies with fruits and veggies might help her gain some nutrition back. Protein powder or peanut butter is also something that I add. I have found that soft foods, such as mashed potatoes (whipped with a stand mixer or a handheld mixer with some sort of gravy or extra butter to make it soupy), oatmeal (plain with extra liquid), pureed soups and the like were easier since I didn't have to chew and it was soft enough to not cause issues. It's just a thought, and it would be something that a gastroenterologist could help with. I hope this helps! It's just an idea and can be an easy fix! I will say though, that if it is acid reflux, it can take some time to heal and she'll need to slowly reintroduce soIids. I wish you and your family the best! Good luck :)

Thank you so much Ladybug_05 for responding.... my sis just got off the phone with the Kidney doc from 7 years ago and she said it is unlikely that the cause is due to the kidneys .

My Niece is going in to see the ENT doctor in4 days time . We are lucky enough to have the Renal doc schedule / order full blood panel on the same day as the ENT appointment . So we will also see what’s going on with the kidneys , white blood cells etc.

Interesting that you should mention food prep ... as we have been providing her with puréed food along with fruit smoothies ever since this started to Ensure she is getting all the vitamins , minerals , proteins ... etc .

Thank you so much again for taking the time to respond . Really appreciate this forum and kind people like you .

she may have a stricture in her esophagus also....they can dialate her esophagus and open that up under sedation....i worked in a GI Center for years....strictures are common and easily treated....great job feeding her soft foods !!...she could also have some muscle mobility problems..which can also be treated with medications....keep us posted !!
